Russell Crowe’s World War II-era movie is Nuremberg, a postwar historical drama about the trials of Nazi leaders and the psychological encounter between U.S. Army psychiatrist Douglas Kelley and Hermann Göring. The Oscars angle needs a distinction: “back in the conversation” is headline framing, not a nomination—Crowe and Nuremberg do not appear among the nominees for the 98th Academy Awards.
What is Russell Crowe’s WWII movie called?
The film is Nuremberg, written and directed by James Vanderbilt. Crowe plays Hermann Göring, while Rami Malek plays Douglas Kelley, the U.S. Army psychiatrist who evaluates Nazi defendants after the war. Sony Pictures Classics describes the story as an examination of the Allies’ effort to bring Nazi leaders to account and the dramatic psychological contest between Kelley and Göring. Although its subject is the aftermath of World War II, Nuremberg is not principally a battlefield movie. Its focus is the postwar trials, the people held for prosecution, and Kelley’s interactions with Göring.
Is Russell Crowe nominated for an Oscar for Nuremberg?
No. The 98th Academy Awards, held March 15, 2026, honored films released in 2025, but the Academy’s official nominee list does not include Nuremberg or Crowe. The Academy’s awards database says its record is complete through that ceremony. Academy: 98th Oscars ceremony Academy Awards Database
#1 Best Overall
- The Allies, led by the unyielding chief prosecutor, Robert H. Jackson (Michael Shannon), have the task of ensuring high ranking Nazi officials answer for the Holocaust in the trial of the century, while a US Army psychiatrist (Rami Malek) is locked in a dramatic psychological duel with former Reichsmarschall Hermann Gring (Russell Crowe).
That means the phrase “put him back in the Oscars conversation” should be read as promotional or headline language, not as a report of a nomination or win. Sony announced a U.S. theatrical release date of November 7, 2025; that release timing made the film eligible to be considered for the 2026 ceremony, but eligibility is not a nomination. Is Nuremberg based on a true story?
The film is based on Jack El-Hai’s nonfiction book The Nazi and the Psychiatrist. It draws on Kelley’s postwar work evaluating Nazi defendants and his encounters with Göring. Netflix Tudum’s March 7, 2026 explainer says Kelley evaluated 22 high-ranking Nazi defendants before trial. Netflix Tudum: Nuremberg true-story explainer

The book is the nonfiction source; the movie is a dramatic adaptation. Readers looking for the historical account behind the film can look for Jack El-Hai’s The Nazi and the Psychiatrist.
