Rosie O’Donnell moved to Ireland on January 15, 2025, and announced the move publicly on March 11. She described the political climate as painful and said she and her child needed to make a difficult decision to look after themselves. She said she would consider returning to the United States when she believed equal rights were safe for all citizens.
When did Rosie O’Donnell move to Ireland?
O’Donnell moved on January 15, 2025, according to The Irish Times. That was five days before Donald Trump’s January 20 inauguration. She disclosed the move in a video announcement on March 11; the following day, The Irish Times reported that she and her child were living in Dublin.
The distinction matters: the move happened in January, while the public announcement came nearly two months later. In March, RTÉ listed an interview on The Late Late Show as her first exclusive Irish television interview since relocating.
Why did Rosie O’Donnell move to Ireland?
O’Donnell described the political situation and her personal circumstances as the reasons behind the decision. In remarks reported by The Irish Times, she said, “It has been heartbreaking to see what’s happening politically and hard for me personally as well.” She added that she and her child “needed to take care of ourselves and make some hard decisions and follow through.”

Her announcement did not name Trump, though the political context made the connection clear in contemporaneous coverage. TheWrap reported her condition for considering a return: “When you know it is safe for all citizens to have equal rights there in America, that’s when we will consider coming back.”
A later Washington Post profile added that O’Donnell did not think she could endure a second Trump term and that concerns for her youngest child were part of the family’s planning. Those details are later context, not wording from the March announcement.

Was Rosie O’Donnell an Irish citizen when she moved?
O’Donnell said she was applying for Irish citizenship; the available reporting does not establish that she already held it. An April 2025 profile republished by The Irish Times said the application had not yet been approved and noted that her Irish grandparents were relevant to her eligibility. No current status is established in those reports.
Her residence is best described as Ireland or the Dublin area. The March reporting placed her in Dublin; other coverage has used a more specific location, but the sources do not establish a precise current address.

How does Trump’s later citizenship threat fit into the timeline?
In July 2025, months after O’Donnell’s relocation, the Associated Press reported that Trump said he was considering taking away her U.S. citizenship. AP noted that O’Donnell was born in the United States and quoted University of Virginia law professor Amanda Frost: “The president has no authority to take away the citizenship of a native-born U.S. citizen.” The July episode followed the move; it was not the trigger for it.

An April profile also discussed O’Donnell’s documentary, Unleashing Hope: The Power of Service Dogs for Autism, which was then scheduled for release on Hulu on April 22, 2025. That release detail provides context about her work at the time; it is separate from the reasons she gave for moving.
