A former senior-level Def Jam executive, identified in court as Jane Doe, sued Russell Simmons in February 2024, alleging that he sexually harassed and assaulted her in the 1990s and harmed her career. Simmons denied the allegations. The federal case was dismissed on jurisdictional grounds in 2025; June 2026 reporting said a New York state judge allowed a refiled case to proceed, a procedural ruling that did not decide whether the allegations were true.
What did the former Def Jam executive allege?
Jane Doe filed a complaint against Russell Wendell Simmons on February 13, 2024, in the U.S. District Court for the Southern District of New York. The complaint identifies her as a former senior-level music executive at Def Jam and alleges sexual harassment and assault during the 1990s, as well as career harm. These are the plaintiff’s allegations, not findings established by a judgment in this case. The federal case is docketed as 1:24-cv-01043.
According to the complaint, workplace harassment preceded an alleged assault at Simmons’s New York apartment. Doe says she went there for a work-related music-video review. Rolling Stone and Pitchfork also summarized the claims; the complaint is the primary source for Doe’s account.
How did Russell Simmons respond?
Simmons denied the allegations through his attorney. Rolling Stone reported the attorney’s statement: “Mr. Simmons has always maintained that he has never engaged in non-consensual sexual relationships with anyone.” The statement is Simmons’s response, not a court finding.

Rolling Stone reported in 2024 that Doe was among 20 women who had accused Simmons of sexual assault or harassment. That is the publication’s reported count, not a judicial determination. Rolling Stone, 2024.
Was the lawsuit dismissed?
The federal suit was reported dismissed in February 2025 for lack of jurisdiction after Simmons said he lived in Indonesia. A jurisdictional dismissal addresses whether a court can hear a case; it does not determine whether the alleged assault occurred. The Guardian reported the federal dismissal.

What happened after the federal dismissal?
In June 2026, reporting said a New York state judge rejected Simmons’s attempt to dismiss a refiled suit on the basis of his overseas residence and allowed the case to proceed. That reported decision concerns whether the case may go forward, not the truth of Doe’s allegations. Rolling Stone reported the state-court development. The available reporting does not provide the full order or establish later docket developments, so it does not confirm the case’s status after June 2026.
