Ronan Keating’s “best bunch” comment referred to The Voice Australia’s 2025 coaching group, not a ranking of that season’s contestants. In an interview reported by PerthNow on 10 August 2025, he praised the coaches’ experience, musical mix and chemistry: Melanie C, Richard Marx, Kate Miller-Heidke and Keating himself.
What did Ronan Keating mean by “this year”?
“This year” meant the 2025 season. PerthNow’s Zach Margolius reported on 10 August 2025 that Keating had made the remarks in an interview with The Sunday Times. The report quoted him saying: “For me, the bunch this year is by far the best bunch I’ve ever worked with of all the shows I’ve done.”

The headline’s phrase “best I’ve ever worked with” is a shortened version of that statement. Keating was referring to the group of coaches he had worked with across his television shows—not declaring the 2025 contestants the best singers he had ever encountered. PerthNow’s report also quotes him praising “the talent, the legendary status, just the fun that we’re having as coaches together and the chemistry between us all”.
Who coached The Voice Australia in 2025?
The 2025 panel consisted of Keating, Melanie C, Richard Marx and returning coach Kate Miller-Heidke. Seven Network described the upcoming season as the show’s 14th and said production would take place in Sydney in its 29 January 2025 announcement.

Keating’s praise had a personal dimension: he said he and Melanie C had known each other for about 30 years, and that he had known Marx for around two decades through their work together. He also said he quickly recognised Miller-Heidke’s talent.
What did he say about the coaches’ musical chemistry?
Keating described Marx, Melanie C and himself as sharing a pop background, while Miller-Heidke brought a folk influence. He imagined the four might meet somewhere in a “pop folk feel” and joked that they could call themselves “Folk Up”. His comments framed the panel’s appeal as a combination of established musical experience, contrasting influences and enjoyment of working together.

What does Keating look for in a performer?
In the same interview, Keating said a strong voice alone is not enough. He said coaches look for character and a distinctive sound—“a voice that you could absolutely pick out on the radio” and identify as belonging to a particular artist. He described that recognisability as what the coaches are trying to find.
His advice to artists was: “Don’t follow the crowds”. He explained that copying what someone else is doing on social media means an artist is already too late. That is Keating’s advice about developing an identity, rather than a guaranteed formula for a music career.

How does the 2025 panel differ from the reported 2026 lineup?
The 2025 quote should not be read as describing a later season. In 2026, reporting listed Tones And I alongside returning coaches Melanie C, Richard Marx, Keating and Miller-Heidke. Variety Australia reported that the season was scheduled to premiere at 7pm on Sunday, 2 August 2026, on Seven and 7plus; 7NEWS also reported the panel and season return.
Those are 2026-season details, separate from the 2025 interview. The reports also described Miller-Heidke as returning after coaching the previous season’s winning artist. Variety Australia’s 2026 season report said that season’s winner would receive $100,000 and a recording development package.
