Families staying at Ronald McDonald House Perth got an early taste of the 2024 Perth Royal Show at a mini-show staged in the house’s gardens. The event brought rides, food stalls, animals and showbags to children whose treatment or recovery could make attending the public show difficult.
A mini Royal Show for families staying at Ronald McDonald House
Sponsored by Lotterywest, the event was held for regional WA children and their parents staying at Ronald McDonald House Perth. It was a preview experience at the house, not the public Perth Royal Show.
Ronald McDonald House chief executive Peter King said some families could not attend the main show because their children had treatment or could not be out for long and manage the crowds. “So it’s an absolute privilege for us today to be hosting the mini show,” he said.
For one family, a chance to get out after hospital
Steven and Amanda Burridge had travelled from Gnowangerup with their seven-year-old son, who had just been discharged from hospital and would miss the main show. “It’s a big relief because our son Brayden was in hospital and he just got out today which is a big relief so we bought them here,” Steven said. Amanda said, “It’s good just to be out and give the kids the experience.”
PerthNow spells the child’s name as “Brayden” in Steven’s quotation and “Braden” elsewhere in its report; the discrepancy is retained here rather than silently resolved.
What the 2024 showbag lineup included
PerthNow reported that the 2024 Perth Royal Show was expected to have more than 350 showbags. Of those, 65 were new, prices ranged from $5 to $165, and more than 130 bags cost less than $25. These are figures for the 2024 show as reported at the time, not current prices or availability.
- Character and novelty bags: Bertie Beetle had eight different bags, including a retro edition for its 60th birthday. Bluey, Yowie, BrainLicker, Extrem-O Mega Sour and Polly Waffle were also mentioned; Polly Waffle bags were returning after 15 years.
- Sport: New additions included Matildas and Socceroos bags. The report also named team-themed options including Magpies, Dockers and Fremantle.
- Fashion and treats: Other themes included fashion and skincare, Miss Coco and Lindt. Mega Fizz, Lollipops and Monster Munch were among the cheapest options, each priced below $6 in the report.
The bags children were hoping to find
Nine-year-old Tahlia Lee Steere said she was looking forward to the rides and petting zoo. Her showbag choices were simple: “I want the fidget showbag or the Bluey one,” she said.
