Multiple accounts place the beginning of Byrne and Cannavale’s relationship in 2012. The circumstances of their first meeting are less settled: some reports say a mutual friend introduced them, while others connect their meeting to Annie. Those accounts do not establish one definitive version. ELLE’s timeline says they met in fall 2012 while Byrne was working on Damages; it also recounts December reports that they had been dating for a few months and had been seen together. Those early sightings were press reports, not a public confirmation from the couple. 2013: Their relationship becomes visible in public
June: CFDA Fashion Awards
Byrne and Cannavale attended the CFDA Fashion Awards together in June 2013, one of their first widely reported public appearances as a couple. ELLE and Vogue include the appearance in their timelines.
September: Cannavale thanks Byrne at the Emmys
Accepting the Emmy for Boardwalk Empire, Cannavale thanked “the love of my life, Rose.” The brief acknowledgment was a direct public expression of their relationship. CBS News reported the speech.

2014–15: They act together
The pair shared the screen in Adult Beginners (2014), Annie (2014) and Spy (2015). Byrne described working with Cannavale as “very intense” and also called him a great actor. Their joint projects have continued to feature in coverage of the relationship, though they have not made their private life a constant subject of public interviews. 2016: Their first son is born
Byrne and Cannavale welcomed their son Rocco Robin on February 1, 2016. Cannavale said Rocco’s middle name honors Byrne’s father, Robin. In November, photographs of Byrne wearing a ring on her left hand during a trip to Australia prompted engagement speculation. 2017: They welcome their second son
Byrne announced in an August 2017 interview that they were expecting another child. Their son Rafael was born in November. 2020: They use “husband and wife” without claiming a wedding
Cannavale explained that “boyfriend and girlfriend” felt young and “partner” felt sterile: “It’s just easier to say ‘husband and wife.’” Byrne joined in with the phrasing. At the time, ELLE reported that they had not tied the knot. In a joint interview around their production of Medea, they also joked about going to bed early; Cannavale described their sons as having contrasting personalities. 2021: Byrne says children and the pandemic delayed wedding plans
Byrne said that having children, followed by the pandemic, kept pushing a wedding off. She also said she loves weddings and respects what they mean to other people. Her account described postponement, not a completed ceremony. Vogue reported her remarks.
2022–24: More shared projects, including Seriously Red and Ezra
Byrne and Cannavale appeared together at SXSW for Seriously Red. They later worked together on Ezra, which was first reported under the title Inappropriate Behavior. In May 2023, Byrne joked that she was more married to Cannavale than to anyone she had been with, then said: “Definitely something that we will do. 2025: Byrne says they have not gone to the courthouse
Asked about their relationship in November 2025, Byrne said: “I say ‘married.’ We just haven’t gone to the courthouse yet, but we’re married.” It captures how she describes their bond while distinguishing that language from a courthouse marriage. January 2026: Byrne thanks her “husband” at the Golden Globes
At the Golden Globes, Byrne thanked her “husband, Bobby” during her acceptance speech. She explained that Cannavale was away buying a bearded dragon for their family. The speech was a recent public instance of the couple’s preferred language for their relationship; it does not by itself establish that they had a legal wedding. CBS News reported the moment.
