Ron Harper, the actor known for the television series Land of the Lost and the 1974 Planet of the Apes, died on March 21, 2024, at age 91. The Television Academy records his date of passing; TheWrap reported that he died of natural causes at his home in West Hills, Los Angeles, citing his daughter, Nicole Longeuay.
Who was Ron Harper?
Harper was an American actor whose work spanned television and film. Alongside his headline roles in Land of the Lost and the 1974 television series Planet of the Apes, his television credits included 87th Precinct, Garrison’s Gorillas, Another World, Generations and Capitol. How did Ron Harper die?
TheWrap reported that Harper died of natural causes at his home in West Hills, Los Angeles. The report attributed the details to his daughter, Nicole Longeuay. The Television Academy confirms the date of his passing but does not give a cause of death.
How did Harper choose acting?
Harper attended Princeton University and served in the U.S. Navy. According to TheWrap, he chose acting rather than accept a fellowship to study law at Harvard. He studied acting under Lee Strasberg and, in 1959, became Paul Newman’s understudy in the Broadway play Sweet Bird of Youth.

In a 1966 statement reproduced by TheWrap, Harper recalled weighing his education against an acting career: “I kept saying to myself, ‘Should you waste your good education being an actor?’ And that little voice within me kept saying things like, ‘What do you want to take that fellowship to Harvard Law for? Be an actor. Starving is fun … And like the fool that any actor has to be, I listened to that dumb little voice.”

TheWrap reported that Harper is survived by his daughter, Nicole Longeuay, and granddaughters Ronnie and Harper.
