Ron DeSantis’s 2024 presidential campaign produced an unusual mix of a glitch-filled online launch, awkward campaign-trail clips and provocative social-media videos. These are notable examples, not an objective ranking of the campaign’s “weirdest” moments; the campaign ended in January 2024.
The Twitter Spaces launch stalled before it got going
DeSantis formally launched his presidential campaign on May 24, 2023, in a live event on Twitter Spaces with Elon Musk. The audio repeatedly faltered: listeners encountered microphone checks, silence and electronic music before the event got underway. TIME reported that more than 600,000 Twitter users waited through roughly 15 minutes of glitches.
The campaign offered a very different measure of the event’s reach. In a May 25 release, it claimed that the Spaces event and launch video had received more than 30 million combined views in their first 15 hours. That figure was the campaign’s own claim; the available account does not establish an independent audit. It is not directly comparable to TIME’s count of users who waited through the glitches.
Awkward exchanges became campaign-trail clips
A campaign appearance can turn memorable for reasons its candidate did not intend. In an August 2023 roundup, Vanity Fair selected clips that included DeSantis laughing at an Iowa car show, responding “Okay” after a voter introduced himself as Tim, and commenting on a child’s frozen treat. Those examples reflect the publication’s editorial choices, not a definitive ranking or proof of how all viewers reacted.

Provocative videos blurred campaigning and online shock tactics
An anti-Trump video used deliberately jarring imagery
In late June 2023, a DeSantis campaign video attacked Donald Trump over past statements supportive of gay rights. Reuters described a montage of muscle-bound men, visual effects and a clip from American Psycho. The video’s abrasive style made it one of the campaign’s most conspicuous efforts to use online provocation as political messaging.
A separate Sonnenrad video drew scrutiny over its creator
A different pro-DeSantis video featured a Sonnenrad, a symbol associated with neo-Nazism. Axios reported that campaign speechwriter Nate Hochman created and shared it through a pro-DeSantis account. The campaign said Hochman was no longer with it.

The video also figured in reporting about the campaign’s wider digital operation. Semafor, citing internal campaign communications it reviewed, reported that senior aides oversaw a strategy of circulating incendiary videos through allied anonymous Twitter accounts. In those messages, campaign research and data director Kyle Lamb wrote, “This belongs in the Smithsonian,” about a video that included a version of the Sonnenrad. The anti-Trump campaign video and the pro-DeSantis Sonnenrad video were separate clips; the reporting identifies different involvement in each.
Some striking remarks came with specific political context
Not every odd or startling campaign moment was a social-media clip. In an August 2023 factbox, Reuters reported that DeSantis vowed to start “slitting throats” inside the federal bureaucracy if elected. Reuters also reported that, when asked whether he had watched Trump’s August 3 arraignment, DeSantis said he had been occupied overseeing an execution in Florida. The remarks stand out partly for their bluntness, but the situations in which they were made matter as much as the sound bites.

The campaign ended after Iowa
