Marie Fredriksson, the singer who formed Roxette with Per Gessle, died on December 9, 2019, aged 61. Her death was announced the following day. Warner Music Group and her management described her as having fought cancer for 17 years.
What was reported about Fredriksson’s death
Warner Music Group’s December 10, 2019 memorial notice said Fredriksson had died after a 17-year battle with cancer. Swedish broadcaster SVT separately reported that she was diagnosed with a brain tumour in 2002. These are the accounts given by those sources; they do not establish additional clinical details. Warner Music Group’s tribute and SVT’s report both appeared on December 10, 2019.
Fredriksson’s life and Roxette career
From a Swedish duo to international hits
Fredriksson formed Roxette with songwriter Per Gessle in 1986. Warner Music Group called “The Look,” released in 1989, the duo’s first worldwide smash and said it topped the U.S. Billboard Hot 100. Their best-known songs also include “Listen To Your Heart,” “It Must Have Been Love” and “Joyride.” Warner reported in 2019 that Roxette had sold more than 80 million records.
Returning to the stage, then retiring from touring
SVT reported that Fredriksson began performing with Roxette again in 2009 and went on world tours. Warner said ill health forced her to retire from touring in 2016. Her bandmate Gessle paid tribute after her death, calling her “an outstanding musician, a master of the voice, an amazing performer.” The Washington Post published an excerpt from his tribute on December 10, 2019.
