His daughter Kirsten Casale Ely confirmed his death to the Associated Press. He was 86. The cited reports did not state a cause of death.
Who was Ron Ely?
Ely was an American actor best known for playing the title role in NBC’s Tarzan. Born Ronald Pierce Ely in Hereford, Texas, on June 21, 1938, he was raised in Amarillo. His television portrayal was distinct from the earlier Tarzan films associated with Johnny Weissmuller: Ely played an educated bachelor who had grown tired of civilization and returned to the African jungle where he had been raised.
How Ron Ely became television’s Tarzan
NBC’s Tarzan ran from 1966 to 1968, with Ely in the leading role. The Associated Press reported that Ely performed his own stunts and worked with animals on the series. AP also recounted that he was cast after Mike Henry was injured by a chimpanzee during the pilot’s filming; that account is a reported recollection, not an independently verified production record.
Other work in film, television and books
Ely’s career included roles beyond Tarzan. He appeared in the 1958 musical South Pacific and starred in the 1975 film Doc Savage: The Man of Bronze. He also wrote two Jake Sands mystery novels, Night Shadows (1994) and East Beach (1995).
