Rooster Teeth announced on March 6, 2024, that it would shut down after 21 years. The Austin-area entertainment company was known for animation, comedy, gaming and podcasts, including Red vs. Blue and RWBY. Its closure did not automatically mean The Roost Podcast Network or every show’s rights ended at the same time.

What happened to Rooster Teeth?

Rooster Teeth launched in 2003, according to contemporary Austin-area reporting. On March 6, 2024, the company announced it was shutting down after 21 years. The announcement was reported by Variety.

At the time, Rooster Teeth was owned by Warner Bros. Discovery (WBD). Its work spanned animation, comedy, gaming and podcasts, with Red vs. Blue and RWBY among its best-known properties.

Why did Rooster Teeth shut down?

General manager Jordan Levin attributed the decision to changes in digital-media consumption and the difficulty of monetizing content across platforms, advertising and patronage. In a staff memo, he wrote: “It’s with a heavy heart I announce that Rooster Teeth is shutting down due to challenges facing digital media resulting from fundamental shifts in consumer behavior and monetization across platforms, advertising and patronage.” The statement was published in Deadline’s March 6, 2024, coverage.

That is the company’s stated explanation, not a complete independent account of its finances or every factor behind the decision. The announcement does not establish revenue, losses, audience figures or staffing numbers.

Did The Roost Podcast Network shut down too?

Not according to the shutdown announcement. WBD said The Roost Podcast Network was expected to continue fulfilling its obligations while the company evaluated outside interest in acquiring it. This was a separate matter from closing Rooster Teeth’s studio operations, as reported by Variety.

That describes the network’s announced status in March 2024. It does not establish who owns or operates it now.

What happened to Rooster Teeth shows and intellectual property?

When the closure was announced, the placement of Rooster Teeth’s catalog and intellectual property—including Red vs. Blue and RWBY—was still under discussion, according to Deadline. Closing the studio therefore did not, by itself, settle who would own each property or where every series would be available.
