Rosalynn Carter’s November 2023 farewell unfolded in three distinct stages: a public tribute in Atlanta, a private funeral in Plains, and burial at the Carter family home. Jimmy Carter attended the Atlanta service; the available official account does not establish which relatives appear in individual photographs or who attended each private event. Use photo captions and original credits—not family assumptions—to identify people.
What the Rosalynn Carter funeral photos can—and cannot—show
The Carter Center announced that the official tribute website offered downloadable photographs and a biography. Its announcement does not identify specific images, photographers, or the people shown in each photograph. The announcement also stated: “Her life of service and compassion was an example for all Americans.” Carter Center announcement, Nov. 19, 2023.
For a reliable caption, preserve the original image credit and caption, then confirm the event and date. Do not identify a person from appearance or presumed family relationship alone. In particular, the public Atlanta tribute and the private Plains funeral were separate events; an image from one does not establish attendance at the other.

Which Carter family members are identified?
Rosalynn and Jimmy Carter’s four children were John (Jack), James Earl III (Chip), Donnel (Jeff), and Amy, according to the National Archives’ family listing: Jimmy Carter records and biographical information. The Carter Center says Jimmy Carter attended the public Atlanta tribute, although he was in hospice care at the time. That does not establish the presence of every child at every service, or identify anyone in a particular photograph.

How to caption a funeral photograph accurately
- Keep the published credit and caption attached to the image.
- Check whether the image depicts the Nov. 28 public tribute, the Nov. 29 private funeral, or the interment; do not use these terms interchangeably.
- Name only people explicitly identified in a reliable caption or contemporaneous source.
- If no person-level identification is available, use a factual event caption without guessing who is pictured.
