SAS: Rogue Heroes returns with Paddy Mayne in command, David Stirling captured and the regiment’s future under threat. Its premiere keeps the series’ irreverent action and dark humor, but gives that swagger a more personal counterweight: grief, wartime trauma and the burden of leadership. The result should suit viewers who enjoy a heightened, tongue-in-cheek war adventure more than those looking for a sober documentary account.
What happens in the season-two premiere?
“Episode One” begins in spring 1943, after Stirling’s capture. Mayne takes charge as the SAS faces a question from GHQ: is the regiment still needed? The official synopsis also places Mayne’s father’s death and the psychological effects of war alongside those military pressures. The opening therefore shifts the series’ focus from the unit’s exploits alone to the cost of keeping it together.
The season’s campaign moves from North Africa toward mainland Europe. That larger arc includes the invasion of Sicily and the later Italian campaign, but those developments belong to the season as a whole; they should not be mistaken for a scene-by-scene account of this premiere.
Does the brash style still work?
The opener retains the show’s combination of action, sarcasm and dark comedy. That irreverence is a defining choice, not a promise of documentary realism: the series heightens its characters and exploits for television while placing them in a story based on real people and events. The humor can make the action lively, though it may feel at odds with the grief and trauma the story also foregrounds.

CBR critic Brittany Frederick gave the premiere 7/10, describing it as a fit for viewers who enjoy tongue-in-cheek adventure. That is one critic’s assessment, not a consensus rating. The Guardian’s Jack Seale, reviewing the season rather than this episode alone, called it “still an utterly thrilling romp of a watch.” Together those reactions capture the show’s appeal and its tonal bargain: embrace the swagger and comic exaggeration, and the ride is more likely to land.
Can Paddy Mayne carry the story?
With Stirling absent and captured, Mayne moves from volatile subordinate to commander. Jack O’Connell’s performance is central to that change: the character must project authority while dealing with loss and the strain of war. The premiere sets up the question of whether his forceful temperament can hold the men together as the regiment faces possible disbandment.

Stirling remains part of the story even while physically absent; his capture changes the unit’s command structure and gives Mayne’s rise its stakes. The season also introduces new arrivals and a second unit, widening the pressure beyond the relationship between the two leaders.
How historical is SAS: Rogue Heroes?
The series was inspired by Ben Macintyre’s nonfiction book Rogue Heroes, but it is a television dramatization created and written by Steven Knight—not a documentary. Its real historical setting and figures provide the foundation, while performance, dialogue and storytelling are shaped for television. Treat characterizations and individual dramatic moments as part of the adaptation rather than as independently verified history.

In SBS’s promotional release, Knight said, “With something like Rogue Heroes you’re compelled to continue because the story did happen and did continue.” That explains the appeal of the underlying history, but it is promotional commentary, not a guarantee that every detail on screen is presented as documentary fact.

The opener is most appealing if you want a fast-moving war drama that mixes danger with irreverent humor and are willing to meet Mayne as the new center of the story. Its more somber concerns—loss, trauma and an uncertain future for the SAS—give the bravado something to push against. For a careful account of the unit’s history, start with Macintyre’s book or another nonfiction source; for heightened historical adventure, this premiere makes a confident return.
