Its lavish songs, family clashes and parallel older romance give that courtship plenty of color, but its later turn toward social commentary can feel more dutiful than convincing. The result is an entertaining, often affecting melodrama whose ambitions outpace its subtlety.
What is Rocky Aur Rani Kii Prem Kahaani about?
Karan Johar’s 2023 Hindi romantic comedy brings together Rocky Randhawa (Ranveer Singh), raised in a wealthy Punjabi family, and Rani Chatterjee (Alia Bhatt), from an educated Bengali household. Their relationship draws both families into a collision over habits, class, gender expectations and values. Alongside the younger couple’s courtship, the film follows the older love story of Rocky’s grandfather Kanwal and Rani’s grandmother Jamini.
At 168 minutes, the film has room for romance, music and family melodrama to unfold on a grand scale. Apple TV’s United States listing gives a runtime of 2 hours 48 minutes and a 13+ rating; that rating applies to that catalog listing, not necessarily every territory. Apple TV’s U.S. listing identifies the film and its catalog details.
Why does the romance work?
The central relationship is the film’s strongest foundation. Singh gives Rocky brash energy without making him impossible to like, while Bhatt’s Rani is assured and quick-witted. Their contrast creates lively scenes, and their chemistry makes the romance feel like more than a device for bringing two households together.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
That connection is also what makes the film’s emotional scale effective. The older romance between Kanwal and Jamini gives the story a wistful counterpoint: affection that has endured, but has not been allowed a simple or complete life. The parallel is familiar, yet it helps the film connect romantic choice across generations.
Where does the update feel unnecessary?
The film wants to be both a sumptuous old-fashioned romance and a pointed conversation about who holds power in families. Its concerns include conventional masculinity, women’s constrained lives and relatives who are overlooked. Those subjects are worthwhile, but the film often presents them through emphatic speeches and carefully arranged scenes rather than letting the characters’ contradictions do the work.

Nandini Ramnath’s Scroll.in review, published 28 July 2023, argues that the post-interval move into a checklist of social causes strains against the film’s carefully styled world. That tension is central to the viewing experience: the movie asks viewers to take its critique of patriarchy seriously while surrounding it with extravagance and melodramatic certainty.
Shubhra Gupta’s Indian Express review, also published 28 July 2023, similarly objects to broad stereotypes, explanatory dialogue and a lack of nuance. Her criticism does not erase the film’s effective moments; rather, it points to the cost of making every point explicit. When a character’s lesson is underlined repeatedly, the drama can feel less like discovery and more like instruction.

What makes the film worth watching anyway?
The performances, songs and spectacle keep the film from collapsing under its own earnestness. The family confrontations have a theatrical energy suited to Johar’s expansive style, and the film is willing to put gender and generational tensions directly on screen. Gupta singles out Ranveer Singh dancing with Tota Roy Choudhury to “Dola Re,” the bra-shop scene that introduces a feminist point, and Shabana Azmi’s turn as an older romantic heroine as notable moments.
The visual polish and musical scale will be a pleasure for viewers who enjoy a romance that wears its emotions openly. They may feel excessive to viewers who want a more restrained film, and Ramnath also criticizes the ostentation and some contemporary reworkings of older musical material. The songs and staging are part of the movie’s appeal, but they do not always make its social arguments more persuasive.
