Roger Corman, the independent filmmaker known as the “King of the Bs,” died at his home in Santa Monica, California, on May 9, 2024. He was 98. Across a career that began in the 1950s, Corman became known for making resourceful, low-budget genre films, giving emerging filmmakers opportunities to learn on set, and founding New World Pictures, a company that brought acclaimed international films to U.S. audiences.
Who was Roger Corman?
Corman was an American producer and director who built a long career outside the Hollywood studio system. The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences credits him with producing more than 300 films and directing 50 titles. A 2024 Los Angeles Times obituary gives a higher production total of more than 350, reflecting the fact that counts can vary with credit conventions. He died on May 9, 2024, aged 98; his family announced his death.
He entered the film business as a messenger at 20th Century-Fox, later worked as a story analyst and screenwriter, and received a story credit for Highway Dragnet (1954). The Academy identifies The Fast and the Furious (1955) as his first producer credit. He went on to work across genre films, most often as a producer and sometimes as a director.

The Poe adaptations starring Vincent Price, including The Pit and the Pendulum and The Masque of the Red Death, are among the artistic high points singled out by the Academy. Corman’s original The Little Shop of Horrors is the 1960 film, not the 1986 musical adaptation.
How did Corman make films so quickly and cheaply?
He worked with compressed schedules and limited budgets, treating constraints as part of the creative problem. The Academy says the original The Little Shop of Horrors was shot in two days and one night. In a BFI interview published in 2024, Corman recalled a $30,000 budget and a two-and-a-half-day shoot; the accounts describe the duration differently, so both figures should be understood as attributed descriptions rather than a single settled runtime.

Speed and economy were not just production tricks. A small, fast-moving set gave people early in their careers the chance to do substantial work and learn by completing films. Corman told the BFI that digital cameras and lighter sound and lighting equipment made independent production easier still, enabling smaller crews to work faster and more cheaply than before.
Which filmmakers got early opportunities from Corman?
Corman gave early opportunities to filmmakers who later became prominent, including Francis Ford Coppola, Martin Scorsese, Ron Howard, James Cameron, and Jonathan Demme, as well as actor Jack Nicholson. The Academy describes his productions as working environments where young filmmakers could direct, edit, and learn under real production constraints. That is a significant legacy, but it does not mean Corman alone made their careers: he credited their own talent and effort.

He received an Academy Honorary Award in 2009 for nurturing aspiring filmmakers. It was an honorary recognition, not a competitive directing Oscar.
Why was The Intruder different?
The Intruder (1962), starring William Shatner, addressed school integration in the South. Corman told the BFI he made it because he opposed Southern segregation laws. He later said he had made the film too serious and that it nearly lectured its audience. The project complicates any portrait of him as only a maker of exploitation entertainment: he also used film to address a contemporary political issue, even while questioning the result.

What did New World Pictures contribute?
Corman founded New World Pictures in 1970. The company produced genre films, but its influence extended beyond production: it distributed European and Japanese films in the United States that Corman believed had not received proper releases. Its catalog included work by Ingmar Bergman, Federico Fellini, Akira Kurosawa, and François Truffaut.
The Academy notes that New World released three foreign-language films that won Academy Awards within a ten-year period: Fellini’s Amarcord, Kurosawa’s Dersu Uzala, and Volker Schlöndorff’s The Tin Drum. The company’s distribution work made Corman’s impact broader than the low-budget American films for which he was best known.

How did Corman describe his own work?
In the BFI interview, Corman was cautious about the auteur label: “I don’t know if auteur’s the right word, but if they say it, I can accept it. If they say I’m not, I can accept that too.” His career is easier to understand through the different roles he played—making films, producing other people’s work, and distributing films that might otherwise have had less access to U.S. audiences.
Asked how he wanted to be remembered, Corman told his family, “I was a filmmaker, just that.”
