Where did the Roblox “Oof” sound come from?
The sound became a signature of Roblox, but its origins are disputed. Windows Central reported that it was made for Messiah, a game released in 2000, and connected the sound to Tommy Tallarico. That is a reported connection, not a conclusive finding about who created or owns the sound. Windows Central’s report covers the history and dispute.
Roblox offered a different account in a January 2020 Developer Forum statement. The company said founders Erik and David got the sound, along with the original Roblox sounds, from “a stock sound CD-ROM they purchased of licensed, copyright free sounds.” Roblox also disputed Tallarico’s claim. That statement records the company’s position; it does not independently establish the sound’s original authorship or settle the legal rights.

Why did Roblox remove “Oof”?
In 2022, Roblox said it removed the sound “due to a licensing issue” and introduced a replacement default sound. That is the reason Roblox gave publicly; the statement does not spell out the underlying licensing details. The removal should not be treated as proof that either side’s account of the sound’s original authorship was correct.
Is the Roblox “Oof” sound back?
Yes. On July 18, 2025, Roblox announced the sound’s return as its default death sound. Its forum announcement was titled “OOF” is back as default sound on Roblox! Windows Central’s coverage also reported that a raw-audio link was available through Roblox Creator Hub. Developers looking for the asset can consult the Roblox Creator Hub audio catalog; access and terms may change.

The return updates the older story that Roblox simply removed “Oof”: the sound was removed in 2022 and announced back as the default in July 2025. The available announcements and reporting do not explain the complete terms of the arrangement or resolve the original authorship dispute.
