Robyn Miller returned creatively to Riven in Cyan Worlds’ 2024 reimagining, composing new music and consulting with the development team. The work also brought him together with his brother, Cyan co-founder Rand Miller, and original Riven game director Richard Vander Wende for a discussion about the game’s world.
What Robyn Miller did on the new Riven
Cyan announced on April 9, 2024, that Robyn Miller contributed new music and consulted on the remake. His role was described as creative collaboration on this project—not a general return to studio employment. Cyan introduced a new track, “Into the Unknown, Part IV,” the fourth movement of a larger four-part piece.
“I attempted to evoke the sounds of the original soundtrack but I was writing for an environment that is unique and stands apart from the original Riven,” Miller said in Cyan’s announcement. He also described writing for the game as “a blast” and said he hoped fans would like the additions. Cyan’s announcement about Robyn Miller’s music and return
Why the reunion mattered
Rand and Robyn Miller founded Cyan in 1987. Their game Riven: The Sequel to Myst followed Myst in 1997, helping establish a shared creative legacy that the remake revisits. Cyan said in its April 2024 announcement that combined sales of Myst and Riven had exceeded 15 million copies worldwide; that figure applies to both series entries together, not to Riven alone.

For the remake, Rand and Robyn joined Vander Wende in a roundtable discussion about worldbuilding. GamesBeat reported that Rand called it the first time the brothers had met in person since the original Riven: “That was kind of crazy. It was the first time we got together in person since Riven. A lot of fun.” GamesBeat’s report on the Riven roundtable
Is the new Riven a remake or a reimagining?
Cyan presents the game as a from-the-ground-up reimagining, not simply a visual upgrade of the 1997 release. The remake retains Riven’s mysterious island setting while changing how players move through it and expanding parts of its puzzles and story. Vander Wende said the team revisited the world’s backstory and characters, corrected discrepancies, and filled in details that needed development. Cyan’s official Riven page
