Roger Corman, the prolific filmmaker and producer whose low-budget productions helped shape American genre cinema and launch future Hollywood careers, died on May 9, 2024, at his home in Santa Monica, California. He was 98. His daughter Catherine Corman announced the death in a family statement; the announcement did not state a cause.

Why Roger Corman mattered

Corman’s influence came from two connected parts of his career: the hundreds of films he produced and directed, and the opportunities he created for people who would go on to become major filmmakers and performers. His career as a producer and director began in 1955. The Associated Press describes his output as hundreds of B-movies; exact totals vary depending on which credits are counted.

The “King of the Bs” nickname points to his association with economical genre pictures, but it does not capture the full range of his work. Through New World Pictures, Corman also helped produce and distribute prestige foreign films, including work by Ingmar Bergman, Federico Fellini and Volker Schlöndorff. In 2009, he received an honorary Academy Award.

A proving ground for new talent

Among the directors who received early opportunities working with Corman were Francis Ford Coppola, Ron Howard, James Cameron and Martin Scorsese. Actors whose careers began in Corman films included Jack Nicholson, Robert De Niro, Bruce Dern and Ellen Burstyn, according to the Associated Press.

Gale Anne Hurd, who worked as Corman’s assistant before becoming a producer, described him as “my very first boss, my lifetime mentor and my hero.” She also called him “one of the greatest visionaries in the history of cinema.”

What low budgets made possible

Corman’s productions could be made on severe schedules: the Associated Press reports that directors were sometimes told to finish a film in as little as five days. That was not the schedule for every Corman movie. The constraints could force fast, resourceful filmmaking, while leaving room to experiment.

In a 2007 documentary about producer Val Lewton, Corman described the trade-off: “There are many constraints connected with working on a low budget, but at the same time there are certain opportunities.” He added: “You can gamble a little bit more. You can experiment. You have to find a more creative way to solve a problem or to present a concept.”

What movies did Roger Corman make?

Corman’s filmography moves across horror, science fiction, crime, dark comedy and counterculture stories. These examples show some of its range; his roles varied, so a film associated with his company is not necessarily one he directed.

  • Horror and science fiction: Attack of the Crab Monsters and Black Scorpion are examples of his low-budget genre output. His Edgar Allan Poe cycle included eight films, according to Vanity Fair. The Raven is a notable Poe adaptation, and the Library of Congress deemed House of Usher worthy of preservation.
  • Dark comedy: Corman directed the original Little Shop of Horrors in 1960. It later inspired a long-running stage musical and a separate 1986 musical film adaptation.
  • Crime and social drama: A Bucket of Blood and Bloody Mama illustrate the breadth of his producer-director work. The Intruder is another example, a social drama distinct from his better-known horror pictures.
  • Biker and counterculture films: The Wild Angels explored biker culture. The Trip, written by Nicholson and starring Peter Fonda and Dennis Hopper, told an explicit story about LSD.
  • A director’s first feature: Corman backed Targets, the 1968 thriller that marked Peter Bogdanovich’s directorial debut.

Where to start with Corman’s films

There is no single essential starting point for every viewer. Choose by the kind of film you want and whether you are interested in Corman as director or as a producer who supported another filmmaker.

Poe-inspired horror House of Usher A Corman Poe-cycle film that the Library of Congress deemed worthy of preservation.

How Corman wanted to be remembered

The family statement, reported by the Associated Press, said: “He was generous, open-hearted and kind to all those who knew him.” It also recalled Corman’s preferred answer to how he should be remembered: “I was a filmmaker, just that.”

That description fits a career built less around one signature film than around sustained production, experimentation and the people who made films with him. In a 2016 interview quoted by Vanity Fair, Corman said: “I try to find some personal statement as much as I can within my subjects. It doesn’t have to be political or earth-shattering, but it does have to be unique.”
