Published estimates put Robert Downey Jr.’s reported Spider-Man: Homecoming pay at more than $1 million per minute of screen time—but that figure is an outlet’s calculation, not a confirmed contractual rate. The result changes sharply depending on which reported screen-time estimate is used.
Where the $1 million-per-minute claim comes from
Downey returned as Tony Stark, also known as Iron Man, in Sony’s 2017 film Spider-Man: Homecoming, mentoring Tom Holland’s Peter Parker. Sony’s film page identifies the movie and its characters.
The headline figure is not a disclosed hourly wage or a studio-confirmed rate. It is arithmetic: a reported fee divided by an estimate of how long Downey appears on screen. Two publications used different screen-time estimates, so they arrived at different per-minute figures.
How published estimates compare
| Source and year | Reported fee | Screen-time estimate used | Calculation and qualification |
|---|---|---|---|
| The Independent (2017) | $15 million, reported | Just under eight minutes | Approximately $1.8 million per minute, calculated by the publication; not a verified contract rate. |
| The Guardian (2019) | $15 million for three days’ work, described as rumored | Not stated | The Guardian presents the fee as rumor and notes that salary figures can be disputed; it gives no per-minute calculation. |
| Hindustan Times (2020) | $15 million, reported | 15 minutes | $1 million per minute, calculated by the publication; the screen-time estimate conflicts with The Independent’s. |
Why the numbers do not settle the question
The fee is reported or rumored in these accounts; none provides Downey’s contract or a studio confirmation. Nor do the publications agree on the screen-time denominator: The Independent says just under eight minutes, while Hindustan Times uses 15 minutes. Without a confirmed fee and a consistent, independently established screen-time count, neither per-minute result should be presented as a definitive figure.
#1 Best Overall
- Spider-Man [Tom Holland] begins to navigate his new identity as the web-slinging super hero under the watchful eye of his mentor Tony Stark.
There is also a basic distinction between time on screen and time worked. A per-minute calculation based on the finished film says nothing by itself about preparation, filming days, other contractual terms, or the value of Downey’s broader role. The three-days figure is itself reported, and The Guardian characterizes the $15 million amount as rumored.

Downey’s role placed Tony Stark in the story as Peter Parker’s mentor and connected the film to the wider Marvel world. In a 2017 interview with GamesRadar+, Marvel Studios president Kevin Feige said: “One of the reasons it’s called Homecoming is because it feels right that Spider-Man can finally inhabit the world, the full Marvel world, from which he came.”
