The political thriller explores disinformation, conspiracy and competing interests in government, technology and Wall Street. Its imagined attack is not a forecast: Netflix’s expert explainer describes serious cyberattacks as possible but the series’ unusually coordinated scenario as unlikely, according to one interviewed expert.
What is Zero Day about?
De Niro plays George Mullen, a former U.S. president called out of retirement to lead the Zero Day Commission and find the source of a deadly cyberattack. As the investigation proceeds, Mullen encounters lies and conspiracies while political and private interests compete to shape the response. The story also brings his family and personal secrets into the crisis.
Co-creator Michael S. Schmidt described the premise as “a story about what would happen to the country if there was another attack on the level of 9/11.” That is the show’s dramatic setup, not a claim that such an event is imminent.
Why is Robert De Niro’s role a first?
Netflix describes Zero Day as De Niro’s first television series in which he stars and executive produces; Tudum calls it his first starring TV series role. This refers to a starring series role, not to his never having appeared on television in any capacity. He also serves as a producer.
#1 Best Overall
De Niro’s George Mullen is a former president asked to lead an investigation, rather than a conventional detective or cybersecurity specialist. In Netflix’s Tudum guide, De Niro describes Mullen’s approach this way: “Don’t dodge anything. Don’t play games. Be honest about what’s going on so that the public knows what’s going on.”
Who made the series, and who is in the cast?
Netflix announced Zero Day as a six-episode limited series. Eric Newman, Noah Oppenheim and Pulitzer Prize-winning journalist Michael S. Schmidt are its creators, writers and executive producers. Lesli Linka Glatter directed every episode and is also an executive producer.

Is Zero Day based on a true story?
No. Zero Day is a fictional political thriller. Its central attack and investigation are invented, although the show draws on real concerns about cyber threats and how governments respond to crises. Netflix’s official explainer discusses the distinction between the technical term and the series’ catastrophic scenario.
A “zero-day” vulnerability is a software flaw exposed before a patch or fix is available. The term relates to the window in which a weakness has no available fix; it does not mean that every attack using such a vulnerability would have the scale or effects shown in the series. Creator Eric Newman offers an informal explanation in the explainer: “The next day, there might be a patch that stops that, and at that point you would need a new zero-day attack that would get around that. It’s a level-setting term; you start over every day.”

Could the cyberattack in Zero Day happen in real life?
Cyberattacks are a real and evolving threat, but the series’ particular scenario should not be read as a likely prediction. In Netflix’s 2025 expert explainer, interviewed expert Watts considers a major attack possible but the level of coordination depicted unlikely. That is an attributed assessment, not a guarantee that a large attack could never happen or a consensus shared by every expert.
The distinction matters: a real software vulnerability can be exploited without producing the series’ sweeping, synchronized catastrophe. Zero Day uses a national crisis to examine disinformation, political power and public trust; it is not an independent technical audit or a probability assessment of a specific attack. De Niro told Tudum, “Right now, our actual world is scarier.”
