The Rings of Power asks viewers to hold two ideas at once: Orcs can have families, fears and a desire for a home, and they can still be violent enemies in a war. The showrunners say those personal stakes are meant to deepen the characters—not to make their actions harmless or guarantee that every viewer will sympathize.
Why give Orcs families and personal stakes?
The Rings of Power is set in Middle-earth’s Second Age, thousands of years before The Hobbit and The Lord of the Rings, according to About Amazon’s series feature. Its Orcs are not presented only as anonymous followers carrying out orders. In a September 4, 2024 interview with TV Insider, showrunners JD Payne and Patrick McKay described the Orc family and the character Glüg as ways to give Orcs individual motivations and emotional depth.
McKay said the possibility that Adar has an Orc family or child felt important to understanding what might motivate him. That is a statement about the creators’ aim: a family can make a character’s choices legible as choices made on behalf of people he cares about. It does not establish that viewers will approve of those choices, or that the show expects them to excuse Orc violence.
Adar’s cause is a home, not innocence
Adar’s project is framed as protection for his people. The TV Insider interview describes him as trying to keep the Orcs from future enslavement by Sauron and to secure a home for them. A recap of Season 2, Episode 6 records a conversation in which Adar asks Galadriel whether the Uruk could live in peace; the recap is useful for orientation, but the episode itself is the authority for its exact wording and context (Tea with Tolkien’s recap).

A desire for safety or belonging can explain why Adar fights. It cannot by itself settle whether his methods are justified. The series places the Orcs’ collective interests beside their participation in violence and the coming war, rather than treating one as proof that the other never happened. Their family scenes complicate the conflict; they do not turn every Orc into a harmless victim.
What the creators say—and what Tolkien’s lore supports
Payne and McKay connect the family idea to Tolkien’s writing about Orc reproduction. In the TV Insider interview, Payne says, “The [Tolkien] lore is that orcs reproduce after the manner of Illuvatar.” McKay adds, “The way that all creatures of the world reproduce is how Orcs reproduce.” These are the showrunners’ explanations as reported by a secondary source, not a substitute for examining Tolkien’s text directly.

The same distinction matters for the adaptation more broadly. The show’s depiction of Orc families, social life and Second Age circumstances is one version of Middle-earth, shaped for this series. It should not be treated as a complete account of Orc society across Tolkien’s writings. Readers who want to follow the lore question to its source can consult The Silmarillion, the work the showrunners identify in that discussion.
Does the humanizing approach work?
It depends on what “work” means. As storytelling, family ties and a search for a home give the Orcs stakes beyond serving a villain; they help explain why Adar resists Sauron and why conflict may look different from the Orcs’ point of view. As a moral argument, however, those details do not resolve the tension between being harmed or threatened and inflicting harm on others.

A scholarly analysis in a Virginia Tech VTechWorks PDF reads the series’ humanizing scenes against its continued depiction of Orc cruelty and the narrative direction in which Orcs later align with Sauron. That is one scholar’s interpretation of a contradiction in the story, not evidence of a general critical consensus or a measured account of audience response. The available reporting establishes what the creators say they intended; it does not show that all viewers feel sympathy or that the strategy succeeds for everyone.

The title’s question is not answered by deciding that the Orcs are either wholly innocent or beyond compassion. The series gives them personal stakes and a collective claim to a home while keeping them within a violent conflict Galadriel fights. That juxtaposition can invite viewers to consider who gets to belong in Middle-earth without requiring them to overlook what the Orcs do. Whether the balance feels persuasive is an interpretation each viewer has to make from the scenes themselves.
