Rob Reiner’s remarks resurfaced because, after the director and his wife Michele Singer Reiner were found dead, Donald Trump posted a message disparaging Reiner and linking his death to what Trump called “TRUMP DERANGEMENT SYNDROME.” Reiner had previously condemned Charlie Kirk’s killing regardless of political beliefs and praised Erika Kirk for forgiving her husband’s killer. Those are separate statements about separate deaths; Trump’s proposed explanation for the Reiners’ deaths was not an established finding.
What Rob Reiner said after Charlie Kirk was killed
In an interview with Piers Morgan after Kirk was killed, Reiner called the killing “Horror. An absolute horror.” He said, “I don’t care what your political beliefs are. That’s not acceptable.” The Los Angeles Times reported those remarks. CNN’s transcript of the interview also records Reiner saying the killing was “not a solution to solving problems.”

Reiner also praised Erika Kirk’s response after her husband’s killing. CNN quoted him calling her forgiveness of the assassin admirable. His comments condemned political violence, rather than endorsing Kirk’s politics.
What Trump said after the Reiners were found dead
After Rob and Michele Singer Reiner were found dead at their Los Angeles home, Trump posted that Rob Reiner’s death was “reportedly due to” anger he had caused through what Trump called “TRUMP DERANGEMENT SYNDROME.” That was Trump’s assertion, not a verified account of what happened. The Associated Press described the explanation as unsubstantiated.

At the time of AP’s report, authorities were investigating the deaths as an apparent homicide. That description is a report of the investigation’s status at publication; it does not establish a motive or confirm Trump’s claim. Trump later stood by his remarks, saying he was not a fan of Reiner and thought he was “very bad for our country,” according to AP.
Why the earlier interview circulated again
The contrast was striking: Reiner had said Kirk’s killing was unacceptable regardless of political beliefs, while Trump used a post about Reiner’s death to disparage him and suggest a political explanation. CNN’s December 15, 2025 transcript noted that Kirk’s executive producer reposted Reiner’s remarks after learning of the Reiners’ deaths. The clip then circulated again, prompting comparisons between Reiner’s words and Trump’s post.

The comparison concerns what each person said; it is not proof that every person in either political camp holds the same view. Reiner’s interview addressed Kirk’s killing and Erika Kirk’s forgiveness. Trump’s post addressed the Reiners’ deaths and made a claim about their cause that AP said was unsubstantiated.
How political figures responded to Trump’s post
AP reported criticism from Republican lawmakers Thomas Massie and Marjorie Taylor Greene. Massie wrote that, regardless of one’s opinion of Reiner, Trump’s comments were inappropriate and disrespectful toward a man who had just been brutally murdered. Greene called it “a family tragedy, not about politics or political enemies.”

The responses underscore that criticism of Trump’s post was not limited to political opponents. They do not, however, establish any investigative conclusion about the Reiners’ deaths.

After Kirk was killed, Trump described the killing as “the tragic consequence of demonizing those with whom you disagree,” AP reported. Reiner’s interview likewise condemned the killing across political differences, while also praising Erika Kirk’s forgiveness. Later, after the Reiners were found dead, Trump’s post connected Reiner’s death to political opposition. Keeping the chronology and attributions clear explains why the old interview resurfaced without treating a social-media claim as fact.

Reiner was a film director known for works including The Princess Bride and When Harry Met Sally. He was also publicly active in politics, a background summarized by Axios; that context does not verify Trump’s explanation for the deaths.
