Richard Tandy, the Electric Light Orchestra keyboardist and multi-instrumentalist who helped define the band’s sound, died in May 2024 at age 76. ELO leader Jeff Lynne announced his death; no cause was given in the report.

Jeff Lynne announced Tandy’s death in May 2024. The Guardian reported that Tandy was 76 and that no cause of death had been disclosed. Lynne wrote: “He was a remarkable musician and friend and I’ll cherish the lifetime of memories we had together.” The Guardian’s 2024 report reproduced the statement from Lynne’s social media announcement.

What did Richard Tandy play in ELO?
Tandy played piano and a range of keyboards and synthesizers, including the Minimoog, Wurlitzer electric piano, Clavinet and Mellotron. The Guardian described his playing as central to ELO’s distinctive blend of progressive rock and futuristic sound. He also provided backing vocals and worked closely with Lynne in the studio, including on string arrangements.
How did Tandy become ELO’s keyboardist?
Born in Birmingham in 1948, Tandy joined ELO in 1972. He initially played bass before taking on the keyboard role. The Guardian reported that he played on every ELO album except the band’s 1971 debut, No Answer—which preceded his joining the group.

What recognition did his work receive?
Tandy was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2017 as a member of ELO. In its 2024 obituary, The Guardian reported that ELO had sold more than 50 million records worldwide, placed 27 singles in the UK Top 40, and sent 15 songs into the US Billboard Hot 100 Top 20. Those figures are as reported by the newspaper.

In 2026, former ELO members presented a silver electric cello to the Royal Birmingham Conservatoire. The conservatoire’s Richard Tandy Production Suite houses instruments and studio equipment used by Tandy, along with a collection of his gold and platinum records, according to BirminghamLive’s March 2026 report.
