Richard Simmons’s March 18, 2024 post began with “I am ….dying,” prompting readers to think he was announcing a personal health crisis. Later that day, he clarified that he was not dying: the message was about mortality and making the most of each day, and he apologized for the confusion. Simmons died in July 2024, so that clarification describes what he said in March—not his later health.
Why did Richard Simmons say “I am dying”?
In a motivational post on March 18, 2024, Simmons opened with the alarming words “I am ….dying.” The rest of the message took a broader view: everyone is moving toward death, he wrote, and people should enjoy life fully. He also recommended listening to Tim McGraw’s song “Live Like You Were Dying.” The opening line, separated from that reflection, sounded to many like a personal announcement. Fox News Digital’s March 18 report described the original message and the reaction it prompted.
What did Simmons clarify, and what was the apology?
Later on March 18, Simmons addressed the reaction directly. “Sorry many of you have gotten upset about my message today. Even the press has gotten in touch with me. I am not dying,” he wrote. He explained that the post was “about saying how we should embrace every day that we have,” then added, “Sorry for the confusion. Love, Richard.” Good Morning America’s March 19 report quoted the clarification and apology.
What did his manager say at the time?
Also on March 18, Simmons’s manager, Tom Estey, told Fox News Digital that Simmons was “alive and well.” That was a contemporaneous response to the post, not a later health update.
How does his July 2024 death change the context?
Simmons died in July 2024. On July 16, the Los Angeles Times reported that the Los Angeles County medical examiner had listed his cause of death as deferred pending investigation. The March post and apology came months earlier: his words then addressed a motivational message that readers had mistaken for a personal announcement, not the circumstances of his later death.
