This is a selected chronology, not a complete archive: the available retrospectives identify images from the late 1970s through 2008, while the official biography fills in the career context between them.
How to read this photo chronology
The years below come from captions in published photo retrospectives, not estimates based on Simmons’s appearance. E!’s “Life in Pictures,” published July 15, 2024, includes images dated 1978, 1979, 1980, 1981 and 1984. A Us Weekly retrospective syndicated by Yahoo, published July 13, 2024, adds images labeled by decade as well as photographs from 1992 and 2008. Together, these selections show several public eras without documenting every year or stage of his life.
For more images, Simmons’s own site has a page titled Photo Gallery. Its available description does not inventory the dates of every image.
Richard Simmons through the years
1970s: From Los Angeles studio to public fitness figure
Simmons moved from New Orleans to Los Angeles in 1973 and opened the Beverly Hills fitness studio SLIMMONS in 1974, according to his official biography. The account says he saw a need for a welcoming place for people who did not already feel at home in conventional fitness facilities.
#1 Best Overall
E!’s retrospective includes an exercise photograph dated 1978, offering an early visual marker of his fitness work. Its images from 1979 and 1980 continue that early public-era sequence. Use the dates and image credits supplied with each individual photograph; the year alone does not establish its exact event or setting.
1980s: Workout videos and television appearances
The 1980s photographs in the Us Weekly/Yahoo retrospective connect this period with “Sweatin’ to the Oldies” workout tapes and related merchandise. E!’s selection provides more specific year labels: it includes a 1981 photograph with Joan Rivers and images dated 1984.
Rank #2
Simmons’s official biography describes a broad television and radio career, including a four-year run on “General Hospital” and his nationally syndicated program, “The Richard Simmons Show.” Those career milestones help explain why photographs from this period can show him in more than one role: fitness instructor, entertainer and television personality.
1992: A later point in the visual record
The Us Weekly/Yahoo retrospective includes a photograph labeled 1992. That date extends the chronology beyond the early fitness-media years, but the captioned selection is not a year-by-year record of Simmons’s work or appearances.

2007–2008: Public appearances in later years
Getty Images’ search listing includes a 2007 “Late Show with David Letterman” appearance. The Us Weekly/Yahoo retrospective also captions a 2008 appearance outside the show. These images document later public appearances, but the available selections do not establish a comprehensive photographic record of Simmons’s final years.
Career context behind the photographs
The official biography says Simmons taught classes and hosted seminars at SLIMMONS until 2013. Its account of the studio’s founding describes a fitness program intended to welcome people across a range of needs. The biography’s wording is the site’s own framing, not an independently verified statement spoken by Simmons: “In 1974, after consulting with doctors and nutritionists to ensure the safety of a program tailored to the needs of everyone, from the overweight and obese, to seniors and the physically challenged, a determined Simmons established an innovative place where the overweight of the world were welcomed with open arms.”

The same biography says Simmons grew up in New Orleans’s French Quarter and weighed 268 pounds when he graduated high school. That is the official site’s account; it provides background to his later fitness work, but should not be used to date or identify an image unless the photograph has its own reliable caption.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Finding and using photographs responsibly
- Start with a captioned source. E!’s retrospective and the Us Weekly collection syndicated by Yahoo provide dated image selections and, for at least some images, credits.
- Check the individual image details. Getty’s search results include images from multiple years and events; verify the item-level caption, credit and date rather than relying on a search listing.
- Do not infer a year from appearance. Use the source’s caption or archive metadata to establish a date.
- Confirm permission separately. A photographer or agency credit is attribution, not proof that an image may be republished. Check the reuse terms for each photograph.
Useful starting points include E!’s “Richard Simmons: Life in Pictures”, the Us Weekly retrospective syndicated by Yahoo, and Getty Images’ Richard Simmons archive search. These sources support a selective visual timeline, not a complete catalog from childhood through his final years.
