It is distinct from Anurag Kashyap’s 2016 feature Raman Raghav 2.0: the later film uses a fictional contemporary killer inspired by the historical figure, rather than reconstructing his crimes.
What is Raman Raghav, A City, A Killer?
Raghavan made the 1991 work on commission for a video magazine, as he later told Mint. The Indian Express describes it as a video docu-drama made for a VHS audience. Hindustan Times reports a runtime of 68 minutes and identifies actor Raghuvir Yadav as playing Raman Raghav; those details are reported rather than drawn from an official archive record surfaced in the available sources. Hindustan Times
The title is also styled with a comma—Raman Raghav, A City, A Killer—in contemporary reporting. Accounts describe the film as based on the story of Raman Raghav, but the sources available here do not establish a comprehensive biography or a verified account of the historical killer’s crimes. It is best understood as an early, separately made screen treatment, not as a definitive record of the case.
Is Raman Raghav 2.0 a sequel?
No. Raman Raghav 2.0 is a separate film directed by Anurag Kashyap, released in 2016. Its title and connection to the historical figure can make it seem like a continuation, but it is not a sequel to Raghavan’s video-magazine work.

| Film | Director and year | Format and reported runtime | Relationship to the historical figure |
|---|---|---|---|
| Raman Raghav, A City, A Killer | Sriram Raghavan, 1991 | Video-magazine film; 68 minutes, as reported by Hindustan Times | Described as based on the story of Raman Raghav |
| Raman Raghav 2.0 | Anurag Kashyap, 2016 | Festival feature; 2 hours 7 minutes, listed by Directors’ Fortnight | A contemporary fictional story inspired by the historical figure |
The Directors’ Fortnight listing presents the 2016 film as a Mumbai-set story about Ramanna, a serial killer fascinated by an infamous 1960s figure, and Raghavan, a rookie police officer. Its credited principal performers are Nawazuddin Siddiqui, Sobhita Dhulipala and Vicky Kaushal. The shared name signals inspiration, not a claim that the film literally recounts the historical crimes.
How does the later film frame its inspiration?
Kashyap described the approach as fictionalized. Torino Film Fest quotes him: “Making this movie we are not glorifying Raman Raghav. It is in a fictionalised, thriller way where we have woven a story around the things we usually ignore.” This is the director’s stated intention, not a guarantee that every viewer will interpret the film the same way. Where can you watch the 1991 film?
Current streaming or physical-release availability for Raghavan’s film is not established by the sources cited here. The fact that it was made for a video-magazine audience does not confirm that a VHS edition remains available today. Check a current, region-specific catalogue or a specialist Indian-film archive before relying on a listing; no particular service can be recommended on the evidence available.
