What happens in “The Hollow Tree, Part 1”?
The discovery of a woman’s decomposed body in a hollow tree points to Kathy Hadderly, who disappeared years earlier. The case has a personal history for Jean Dixon, a disgraced former officer who investigated the disappearance. Ridley asks her to return and help revisit the evidence. PBS summarizes the premise this way: “When a body is found in the woods, Ridley unearths a connection to a cold case.”
The investigation also reaches beyond police work: the Hadderly family and Jean’s personal relationships become part of the story. PBS’s synopsis specifically notes that the case compromises Jean’s relationship with her boyfriend, Ross.

Why does the episode feel more disturbing than a standard crime drama?
“Disturbing thriller” is a critical reading of the episode’s tone, not PBS’s genre label. The setup promises a familiar murder mystery, but the review framing emphasizes unsettling conduct by two men rather than only the mechanics of solving the case. That shift makes the episode’s unease as much about people and relationships as about the unresolved crime.
The distinction matters: the body, the cold-case connection, and Jean’s return are part of the episode’s stated setup; describing the result as a disturbing thriller is an interpretation of how that material plays. The episode remains listed by PBS as Drama.

How does Part 1 connect to Part 2?
This is the first half of a two-part story, not a standalone resolution. PBS’s season guide lists Season 2, Episode 4 as “The Hollow Tree, Part 2,” continuing the investigation into the body found in the tree. The first episode establishes the cold-case link and renews Jean’s involvement; the follow-up carries the case forward.
