It is disputed. Ricky Martin was reported in 2018 as saying Rebecca de Alba knew he was gay while they were together. De Alba said in 2010 that neither of them knew during the relationship and that he told her after they separated. In 2020, she said Martin’s public coming-out was no surprise because she already knew, but she did not specify when she learned. The public accounts do not settle the timing independently.
What did Ricky Martin and Rebecca de Alba say?
| When and speaker | What the account says | What it establishes |
|---|---|---|
| April 12, 2010 — Rebecca de Alba, as reported by People en Español | She said that while they were together Martin did not know he was gay and neither did she. She also said he told her after the relationship ended. | Her account places her knowledge after the breakup, not during their relationship. People en Español |
| March 6, 2018 — Ricky Martin, quoted in Telemundo’s report of a Vulture interview | “Ella sabía que era gay, pero estábamos juntos” (“She knew I was gay, but we were together”). | Martin’s reported recollection says she knew while they were together. Telemundo relayed the quote from Vulture; the full original interview text was not available in the reporting reviewed here. Telemundo |
| December 2020 — Rebecca de Alba, in an interview with Yordi Rosado | She said that Martin’s public coming-out was no surprise because she already knew. | She knew by the time he came out publicly, but this statement does not establish whether she knew during their relationship. Infobae |
Does the evidence show she knew while they were dating?
No public account resolves the disagreement. Martin’s 2018 remark is direct support for the claim in the headline, but it reaches readers through Telemundo’s report of his Vulture interview. De Alba’s 2010 account gives a different timeline: she said neither knew while they were together and that Martin told her afterward. Her 2020 remark confirms that she knew by his public announcement, not when she first learned.
These are statements about a private conversation and timeline. They should be attributed to the person who made them, rather than treated as independent proof of what the other person knew.
What did de Alba say about the relationship and breakup?
In the 2010 report, de Alba rejected the idea that their relationship was a cover. She described them as a committed couple who wanted a family. She attributed the breakup to distance, disagreement over whether and where to raise children, and no longer sharing a life plan—not to Martin’s later public disclosure. These are her explanations of their private history, not independently verified facts. People en Español’s 2010 report

Why does the timing matter?
Knowing by the time of Martin’s public coming-out is not the same as knowing while they were a couple. The statements describe different points on that timeline, and de Alba’s later comment does not by itself contradict her earlier account that she learned after the breakup.
Martin has also said he was not ready when Barbara Walters asked about his sexuality on television in 2000, and that he was in love with women he dated, according to ABC News’ 2021 report. That context is a reason not to assume that a later public identity disclosure proves an earlier relationship was insincere or that both partners understood his identity in the same way at the time.
