Rhea Ripley can be booked as a babyface without acting like a conventional hero—and fans can cheer her without endorsing every choice her character makes. Her appeal is rooted partly in the forceful persona that worked when she was a heel, while the story around her can give viewers a reason to cheer her opponents’ setbacks or her own victories. Calling her a “terrible babyface” is an interpretation of that mismatch, not an established measure of how audiences feel.
Why does the crowd cheer a wrestler who still acts like a heel?
Wrestling alignment, character behavior, and audience response are different things. WWE may position a wrestler as a face in a storyline; that character may still be aggressive, selfish, or vindictive; and a crowd may cheer because the performer is entertaining, charismatic, dominant, or simply more compelling than the person across the ring. A cheer does not necessarily mean the audience believes the character is morally right.
That distinction fits Ripley’s history. In an August 9, 2024 interview, modified August 30, Sports Illustrated’s Justin Barrasso described her popularity as a heel as a reason for her babyface change. That was Barrasso’s account of the booking, not a formal WWE explanation. After returning from an arm injury, Ripley said, “Hearing people cheer for me, it’s even louder than I thought it would be.” Her comment describes a particular reaction she experienced; it is not a survey of fans.
What changed—and what stayed the same?
A character built without a clear crowd signal
Ripley has described how difficult it was to read her role when she joined WWE’s main roster during the pandemic. With no live crowd to react, she said, it was hard to know whether she was being presented or received as a face or a heel. In a June 28, 2025 article, PWMania transcribed her interview with Chris Van Vliet: “So then going out there and being so confused on what I’m doing, but not having that crowd reaction to actually feed off of and prove my point that I was a babyface at the time. It made it really hard.”

Judgment Day widened the persona
Ripley has credited her pairing with Dominik Mysterio and Judgment Day with helping her open up as a performer. She described developing “Mami” beyond being “the hard ass all the time.” That points to a broader character, not necessarily a moral makeover: the intimidating, forceful traits that audiences had seen in her heel work could remain part of the appeal.
Why Judgment Day’s losses can draw cheers
Cheering Ripley and enjoying Judgment Day’s comeuppance are not mutually exclusive. A viewer can like her presence while wanting the group to lose, or cheer a moment because a rival finally gets the upper hand. In a February 2, 2026 WrestleZone report, Ripley offered her own explanation of the faction’s appeal: “I think people just like watching them get their asses beat, to be completely honest.” The remark concerns Judgment Day and its losses; it does not explain every cheer Ripley receives.

This is one reason a face turn can feel uneven. The story may position a wrestler as the person to support, while the character’s conduct retains the abrasiveness fans enjoyed when she was a heel. Some viewers may see that as an inconsistent babyface; others may simply enjoy the attitude, the performance, or the conflict. The available interviews offer useful context, but they do not establish which reading is most common.
Is Rhea Ripley a “terrible babyface”?
That label depends on what a viewer expects a babyface to do. If the standard is a conventionally virtuous hero who treats allies and rivals generously, Ripley’s aggressive persona can seem out of step with the role. If the standard is a compelling character audiences want to watch and support in a particular story, her heel-derived traits do not automatically disqualify her.

It helps to separate five questions when judging a wrestling turn:
- Booking alignment: What role does WWE assign her in the story?
- On-screen conduct: Is she acting generously, selfishly, aggressively, or vindictively?
- Crowd response: Is the audience cheering her, reacting to an opponent, or responding to a specific moment?
- Character continuity: Which traits from the persona fans liked as a heel have carried over?
- Story payoff: Does the conflict offer a satisfying consequence, reversal, or comeuppance?
Those answers can point in different directions. A crowd reaction is evidence of a reaction in that moment, not proof that every fan approves of the character’s behavior or agrees with WWE’s alignment.

What the evidence does—and does not—show
Ripley’s interviews and the reporting around them support a plausible explanation: her established persona remained compelling through a change in booking alignment, and faction stories can give audiences additional reasons to react. They do not show that all fans cheer her, that every segment gets the same response, or that WWE’s current creative plans are based on a measured audience consensus.
