John Lennon was shot and killed outside his Manhattan home, the Dakota, on December 8, 1980. Mark David Chapman fired five shots, according to the University of Virginia School of Law Library’s account; Lennon died on the way to the hospital. Chapman pleaded guilty the following year and was sentenced to 20 years to life. This retrospective revisits the established facts and the latest parole update reported in 2025.

Who killed John Lennon?

Mark David Chapman killed Lennon outside the Dakota Apartments, Lennon and Yoko Ono’s residence in Manhattan. Lennon was 40. The University of Virginia School of Law Library’s Dengrove Collection account records that Chapman fired five shots; it does not establish the number of wounds, so the two figures should not be treated as interchangeable. The library’s case account describes the shooting and court disposition.

What happened the night Lennon was murdered?

On the night of December 8, 1980, Lennon and Ono returned to the Dakota from a recording session. Chapman shot Lennon outside the building. The library account says Lennon died on the way to the hospital. The available accounts establish this outline but do not provide a minute-by-minute chronology or a detailed medical account.

Earlier that day, Lennon had signed a copy of his album Double Fantasy for Chapman, according to the Associated Press. Chapman was arrested within minutes of the shooting, AP reported. The autograph is a documented detail of the day; by itself, it does not explain the attack or establish what Lennon knew about Chapman’s intentions. AP’s September 2025 report recounts those details alongside the parole decision.

How was Chapman prosecuted?

Chapman pleaded guilty on June 22, 1981, and was sentenced to 20 years to life, according to the University of Virginia account. That sentence carries a minimum term and the possibility of parole consideration; it is not a fixed release date.

What happened to Mark David Chapman?

In September 2025, AP reported that Chapman had been denied parole for the 14th time and was serving his sentence at Green Haven Correctional Facility. AP said his next hearing was scheduled for February 2027. That was a reported schedule, not confirmation of what later happened at a hearing, so it should not be read as a verified current outcome.

AP also reported that Chapman told a parole board three years before its 2025 story: “I knew what I was doing, and I knew it was evil, I knew it was wrong, but I wanted the fame so much that I was willing to give everything and take a human life.” The statement is Chapman’s account of his motive to the board, not an independent psychological finding.

What the documented record establishes

The cited accounts support the core facts: Lennon was killed outside the Dakota on December 8, 1980; Ono was with him as they returned home; Chapman fired five shots according to the University of Virginia account; Chapman pleaded guilty and received a sentence of 20 years to life; and AP reported a 14th parole denial in 2025. They do not provide a direct, detailed account of the investigation, medical findings, Ono’s testimony, or a definitive psychological explanation of Chapman’s motives. Avoid treating those unanswered questions as settled by the limited public summaries cited here.
