What kind of album is RENAISSANCE?
Released July 29, 2022, through Parkwood Entertainment and Columbia Records, RENAISSANCE is Beyoncé’s seventh solo studio album. Apple Music lists 16 songs and a runtime of 1 hour 2 minutes. Parkwood described it at release as “Act I,” a framing later connected to COWBOY CARTER in Associated Press coverage in February 2024.

Parkwood said Beyoncé recorded the album over nearly three years during the pandemic. In the release announcement, Beyoncé described the intended feeling as a refuge from pressure: “My intention was to create a safe place, a place without judgment. A place to be free of perfectionism and overthinking. A place to scream, release, feel freedom.” She also said the album let her dream and find escape during a frightening period. That is the artist’s stated aim, not a guarantee of how every listener will experience it.
How does its sound move across the track list?
The album’s dance foundation is broad rather than uniform. Apple Music’s editorial description hears a four-on-the-floor pulse in “BREAK MY SOUL,” Afro-tech in “MOVE,” disco-inflected funk in “CUFF IT,” and R&B, gospel and hip-hop in “CHURCH GIRL.” It points to ballroom references in “PURE/HONEY,” a softer vocal-and-guitar texture in “PLASTIC OFF THE SOFA,” and Donna Summer’s “I Feel Love” as a touchstone for the escapist disco of “SUMMER RENAISSANCE.” Those are useful editorial characterizations, not uncontested genre boundaries.

That range gives the sequence more shape than a single sustained club groove. The softer “PLASTIC OFF THE SOFA” offers a pocket of intimacy amid the dance-floor momentum, while the closing “SUMMER RENAISSANCE” reaches toward disco’s ecstatic, open-ended lift. Across the album, the changes in texture make the dance focus feel like a framework for variation rather than a constraint. The shifts can be read as an attempt to hold together distinct club and popular-music vocabularies; the evidence available does not establish a technical track-by-track account of transitions or tempos.
Does the album’s celebration do justice to the histories it draws on?
Its club references carry cultural weight. In Pitchfork, Julianne Escobedo Shepherd described the album as a celebration of club music and its “sweaty, emancipatory spirit,” placing its references in relation to Black and queer club spaces, including house and techno histories associated with Black Chicagoans and Detroiters and New York ballroom communities.

Kiana Mickles, writing for Resident Advisor, also addressed queer histories and club music, but argued that the album both pays tribute to and glosses over decades of queer plight. That criticism identifies a real tension in the record’s scale and polish: homage can bring club lineage into a huge pop frame, yet the same smoothness may flatten the hardship and specificity behind that lineage. Mickles’s reading is an interpretation, not a settled verdict on the album’s meaning.
RENAISSANCE is most compelling when pleasure and history are allowed to coexist without being treated as interchangeable. Its references invite listeners to hear dance music as more than a set of sounds, while its buoyant presentation can leave the social histories in the background. The result is celebratory and ambitious, though not beyond critique.

Is the long dance-focused run worth the commitment?
At 16 songs and the listed 1-hour-2-minute runtime, the album asks for room to unfold. Its contrasts help sustain attention: affirming dance cuts sit alongside softer passages, and the styles range from house and disco to gospel-inflected and ballroom-associated moments. The payoff is less a tightly plotted narrative than a sequence that keeps changing its texture while returning to collective release as its through-line.
The closing “SUMMER RENAISSANCE” makes that approach legible: rather than ending with a stripped-down resolution, the album sends its listener out on a disco extension of the record’s escapist impulse. As an “Act I,” it also suggests an installment in a larger artistic frame, though the album works on its own terms as a sustained, shape-shifting celebration.
Verdict
RENAISSANCE is a bold dance-pop work whose breadth is part of its pleasure: Beyoncé moves across club idioms without losing the album’s central pull toward release. Its glossy scale does not erase the question of how fully it recognizes the Black and queer histories informing those sounds, and critics have answered that question differently. That tension makes the record more interesting than a simple victory lap—and keeps its euphoria from feeling weightless.
