Beabadoobee’s third album, This Is How Tomorrow Moves, frames a breakup not as a single dramatic ending but as a period of trying to understand who you are afterward. Its 14-track arc moves between guitar-led alternative pop, piano balladry and indie folk, giving that self-examination more than one musical register. The result is a record whose defining tension is vulnerability alongside a growing sense of self-possession.
A breakup album about finding your bearings
Released by Dirty Hit on 9 August 2024, This Is How Tomorrow Moves is Beabadoobee’s third studio album. Apple Music’s editorial framing places its writing in the aftermath of a breakup, as Beatrice Laus reckons with a life that has started to feel unfamiliar. That premise gives the album a wider emotional reach than a straightforward account of a relationship ending: the question is also how to recognize yourself when the shape of your life changes.
Laus described writing as a way to make sense of that unsettled state. Speaking to Apple Music, she said, “I really needed music to help me understand what my brain was going through.” That is a useful key to the album’s emotional directness: uncertainty is not something the songs need to resolve before they can express it.
How the sound shifts across the record
Apple Music’s descriptions point to a deliberately broad palette rather than a single fixed mode. “Take a Bite” draws on ’90s alternative rock and pop; “Girl Song” pares things back to piano balladry; “Ever Seen” moves toward indie folk. Those contrasts suit an album concerned with emotional readjustment: a change in arrangement can mark a change in perspective, not just a change of genre.

“Take a Bite” opens on a more outward-facing note
As the first track, “Take a Bite” establishes the album’s alternative-rock and pop reference points. Its position matters: the record begins with a recognizable, guitar-centered frame before making room for more exposed and quieter approaches.
“Girl Song” makes space for vulnerability
Apple Music identifies “Girl Song” as a spare piano ballad. That reduced setting places the voice and the emotional content in the foreground, offering a counterweight to the more rock-oriented opening.

“Ever Seen” widens the palette
Described by Apple Music as indie folk, “Ever Seen” adds another texture to the album’s sequence. Rather than treating a breakup as one unchanging mood, the shifts between these songs suggest that reflection can be restless, intimate and outward-looking at different moments.
The sequence gives the album a clear arc
The album runs for 14 tracks, opening with “Take a Bite” and closing with “This Is How It Went.” Between them, the sequence moves through “California,” “One Time,” “Real Man,” “Tie My Shoes,” “Girl Song,” “Coming Home,” “Ever Seen,” “A Cruel Affair,” “Post,” “Beaches,” “Everything I Want” and “The Man Who Left Too Soon.” The closing title, arriving after that progression, gives the record a sense of looking back at events as something that can be narrated rather than simply endured.

That shape reinforces the album’s central idea: moving forward does not require pretending the past was simple. The title promises motion, while the closing track’s past tense hints at the distance needed to tell the story.
What this phase means in Beabadoobee’s career
This Is How Tomorrow Moves became Beabadoobee’s first UK No. 1 album, debuting atop the Official Albums Chart in the week of 16 August 2024. It also reached No. 1 on the UK Official Vinyl Albums Chart during that debut chart week. These are specific UK chart results from 2024, not measures of the album’s current sales or standing worldwide.
The chart history provides a clear career marker: Fake It Flowers peaked at No. 8 in 2020, and Beatopia at No. 4 in 2022, before this album reached No. 1. The rising positions establish increased UK chart success, but chart movement alone cannot prove artistic development. More telling is the album’s stated emotional frame and its shifts between rock, pop, piano and folk approaches.
There is also a notable contrast in how the project came together. Laus told Apple Music that her meeting with producer Rick Rubin was “almost like a therapy session,” recalling that it centered on life and catching up. The album was recorded at Shangri-La in Malibu with Rubin and long-term collaborator Jacob Bugden. That context aligns with a work focused on introspection, though it is the songs’ writing and arrangement—not the studio story—that give the album its artistic identity.

A measured verdict
The strongest case for This Is How Tomorrow Moves is its combination of an emotionally legible premise and a palette that can accommodate more than one version of that feeling. The contrast between the alt-rock and pop of “Take a Bite,” the piano-led “Girl Song” and the indie-folk direction of “Ever Seen” supports an album about trying to understand change from different angles. Beabadoobee’s UK chart milestone makes this a consequential release in her career; the more lasting point is the way it frames self-understanding as an ongoing process rather than a tidy breakup resolution.
TIME contributor and singer-songwriter Abrams offered one outside perspective, describing the album as “gritty and tough” while also noting its sensitivity. That is an individual critical response, not a consensus verdict, but it captures the balance at the heart of the record’s framing: tenderness need not mean passivity, and confidence need not erase hurt.
