La Fiscalía Federal del Distrito Norte de Illinois anunció el 21 de mayo de 2024 que Glenis Zapata —escrita “Glenys” en parte de la cobertura en español— fue añadida a una acusación sustitutiva en Chicago. Los fiscales alegan que, cuando trabajaba como auxiliar de vuelo, ayudó a transportar ganancias del narcotráfico en vuelos comerciales. Una acusación presenta alegaciones; no demuestra por sí sola culpabilidad ni equivale a una condena.
¿Quién es Glenis (Glenys) Zapata?
El comunicado de la Fiscalía Federal del Distrito Norte de Illinois identifica a la acusada como Glenis Zapata. Telemundo empleó la variante “Glenys”. La diferencia ortográfica no acredita que se trate de dos personas distintas.
Según el comunicado fiscal, Zapata tenía 34 años y residía en Lafayette, Indiana, cuando fue acusada. Telemundo reportó que fue coronada Miss Indiana Latina en 2011. Ese dato es contexto biográfico de prensa, no parte de los cargos federales descritos por la fiscalía.
¿De qué la acusan?
La acusación sustitutiva, anunciada el 21 de mayo de 2024 en el Tribunal de Distrito de Estados Unidos en Chicago, añadió a Glenis Zapata, Ilenis Zapata y Georgina Banuelos a cargos ya planteados contra otras 15 personas. Los fiscales alegan que Glenis Zapata aprovechó su empleo como auxiliar de vuelo y su credencial “Known Crew Member” para trasladar efectivo desde el Medio Oeste hacia el sur de Estados Unidos y México en vuelos comerciales.

La acusación enumera dos presuntas operaciones de lavado de dinero atribuidas a Zapata:
- El 7 de agosto de 2019, cerca de USD 170.000.
- El 10 de septiembre de 2019, al menos aproximadamente USD 140.000.
En conjunto, esos dos montos suman aproximadamente USD 310.000; es una suma de las cantidades alegadas en la acusación, no una cifra certificada por separado. La fiscalía sostiene que el efectivo correspondía a ganancias del narcotráfico.

¿Qué papel atribuye la acusación a las otras empleadas del banco?
Ilenis Zapata y Georgina Banuelos, empleadas de un banco en Lafayette, fueron acusadas por presuntamente cambiar billetes de menor denominación por billetes de mayor denominación y no presentar los reportes de transacciones en efectivo requeridos. Esas funciones bancarias se atribuyen a ellas; no deben confundirse con la conducta que la acusación atribuye a Glenis Zapata, relacionada con el transporte de efectivo en vuelos.
¿Cómo se relaciona el caso con la presunta red de narcotráfico?
La misma acusación describe una organización que, según los fiscales, transportó cocaína desde México a ciudades de Estados Unidos —incluida Chicago— entre 2018 y 2023. La fiscalía habló de miles de kilogramos en la descripción general del caso. Esa cifra forma parte de las alegaciones sobre la organización amplia y no es una conclusión judicial ni una cantidad que deba atribuirse personalmente a Zapata.
