She recalled believing afterward that the woman no longer spoke to her—but she has not identified the actress. Kate Winslet was an online guess, and Witherspoon later said they remain close friends and never had a falling out.
What Witherspoon said happened
In an interview with Will Ferrell reported on January 30, 2025, Witherspoon recalled being asked to present an award to a “serious, proper actress.” She said she had never attended that ceremony and assumed it was a roast.
“So I got up and I roasted her,” Witherspoon said. She described the room’s tone as “British and elegant and classy,” then recalled joking, “Remember the time we got laser hair removal?!”
Witherspoon said she was still embarrassed by the speech and believed the woman no longer spoke to her: “We’re not friends anymore. I’m not even kidding — we’re not friends anymore.” That is Witherspoon’s recollection of what she thought had happened; it does not establish that the other woman ended the friendship or explain her reaction. Just Jared reported the interview, and The Standard also covered the anecdote, attributing it to an interview with People.

Was the actress Kate Winslet?
The sources do not identify the actress. Winslet became a possible guess because Witherspoon honored her at the 2007 BAFTA/LA Cunard Britannia Awards. An unofficial fan-site post, which says it drew its account from The Envelope, describes Witherspoon’s speech and includes personal anecdotes about Winslet. That connection explains the speculation, but it is not evidence that Winslet was the woman in the later story. The archived fan-site post is not an official transcript.
Witherspoon’s clarification about Winslet
On February 1, 2025, Witherspoon addressed the online guesses in an Instagram Story, as reported by Just Jared. She said she had just spoken with “my very dear friend for years, Kate W.” and wrote: “We are good friends and have never had any falling out.” She also called the speculation “completely UNTRUE.” Her statement makes clear that Winslet was not the person she meant in the anecdote. Just Jared reproduced Witherspoon’s clarification.
