The identification turned the clip from an internet mystery into a traceable recording with a title, credited creators and a film source. The Guardian’s account of the discovery also places it within “lostwave”: music that circulates without its source being readily known.
How did Reddit users find it?
A 17-second clip starts a search
In 2021, a user known as carl92 posted a 17-second excerpt to WatZatSong, a site where people ask for help identifying music. The clip’s sound and the lyric that gave it its unofficial name became clues for listeners trying to identify the recording.

Clues lead to the Booth brothers and a film
According to Gizmodo’s account, a participant came across a similar-sounding song in an online video of an adult-film scene. The Booth brothers’ names then provided a lead to check against music-rights databases. The identification emerged from the wider Reddit investigation: it was not simply a matter of one person hearing the clip and immediately naming it.
That trail led searchers to “Ulterior Motives” in Angels of Passion. Redditors had connected the sound, the credited creators and the film appearance to resolve the question of where the track could be heard.

Which film features “Ulterior Motives”?
The song was located in Angels of Passion, an adult film released in 1986. The Guardian and Gizmodo reported the film as the source in 2024. Finding the track in the film establishes where it appears; it does not, by itself, establish that it was composed specifically for the film.

Lostwave searches often begin with a recording that listeners can share but cannot readily name or place. Here, a short clip posted years before the solution gave a community a common point of reference, while additional listening and records helped connect it to an existing title and source.
Rank #3
The mystery is now resolved at the level reported by the outlets: the clip is “Ulterior Motives,” by Christopher Saint Booth and Phill Booth, and the song appears in Angels of Passion. The story does not establish that the original upload was a hoax or explain why the excerpt became separated from its source.
