In February 2024, Screenwest announced that casting had begun for Red Rock Run, a planned Australian family feature set in the Pilbara. The announcement said 550 children had tested and that filmmakers hoped to cast the lead, Lucy, and supporting child roles from Western Australia. That is a historical update—not confirmation that auditions are still open in 2026. The sources available do not confirm whether filming took place, who was cast, or when the film will be released.
What is Red Rock Run about?
The story is set in 1978 and follows Lucy, a 10-year-old girl with dyslexia who hopes to win her father’s love by taking part in a gruelling 120 km outback marathon. In the official synopsis, Lucy is barred from regional athletic trials after racing a delivery plane on a remote dirt airstrip. With help from her grandmother, she defies her Vietnam veteran father and enters the first children’s team in the Red Rock Run. Screenwest’s 8 February 2024 announcement described the project as a feature film planned for production in Karratha, in Western Australia’s Pilbara region.
Writer Meg Shields has said the story draws on her own Pilbara childhood. In 1976, she ran in the first children’s team to enter the Black Rock Stakes, a 120 km marathon relay from Goldsworthy to Port Hedland that involved pushing a barrow of iron ore. That experience inspired the film, but the fictional Red Rock Run is not presented as a documentary reconstruction of the event.
Is casting still open?
There is no confirmation in the cited sources that casting remains open. Screenwest reported in February 2024 that casting had commenced and that 550 children had tested. It also said the filmmakers hoped to cast Lucy and other supporting children from Western Australia. A same-day PerthNow report said Lucy had yet to be cast at the time it was published. Both reports describe the situation then, not a current audition opportunity.

The old announcement’s casting contacts should not be treated as active application details without a newer notice from the production or its representatives. The available sources do not identify who ultimately played Lucy or the grandmother.
Who is making the film?
Red Rock Run was announced as Meg Shields’s debut feature, produced by Miriam Stein and directed by Cathy Randall. The project is a Tama Films production. Screenwest’s production notice named Screen Australia, Screenwest, Lotterywest, the WA Regional Screen Fund, Spectrum Entertainment and Screen NSW among the major production investors. It named Icon Film Distribution as the local distributor and Parkland Pictures as the international sales partner; these credits do not establish that the film is currently available to watch.

What was announced about funding and local impact?
The 2024 announcements described planned support and projected economic benefits, not final audited outcomes.
- $2 million in government funding: The Government of Western Australia said this support came through the WA Regional Screen Fund and Footloose Production Funding via Screenwest. The government announcement was made before production.
- 220 expected jobs: The same announcement projected roles for Western Australian cast, crew and extras; it did not report a final employment count.
- $5.9 million in estimated state expenditure and $3.85 million in estimated regional expenditure: These were projections in the government announcement, not confirmed spending totals.
- $100,000 in sponsorship: The City of Karratha said council endorsed sponsorship for the production in March 2024. The City’s notice records that endorsement, not a later production or release update.
Has the film been made or released?
The cited official and contemporaneous reports announced a production plan for Karratha in 2024. They do not establish whether filming went ahead, whether the film is complete, or whether a release date or viewing option has been set. No release or streaming date is confirmed by these sources, so the 2024 greenlight should not be read as proof of current availability.
