For the strongest awards-winning drama, start with Walk the Line; for Witherspoon’s defining comic role, choose Legally Blonde; and for a series, try Big Little Lies. This curated ranking weighs performance, career significance, lasting recognition and range across comedy, drama and television. It covers 12 representative screen projects, not every credit, and its order is editorial rather than an official consensus.
Reese Witherspoon’s movies and series, ranked
-
Walk the Line (2005)
Witherspoon’s portrayal of June Carter opposite Joaquin Phoenix’s Johnny Cash is the clearest awards-led dramatic showcase in this selection. The Television Academy credits the performance with the Academy Award, Golden Globe, BAFTA, SAG and Critics Choice award for best actress; the Golden Globes database also records her win. Choose it first if you want a major dramatic performance.
-
Election (1999)
As ambitious student Tracy Flick, Witherspoon brings sharp comic precision to a dark dramatic comedy. The role is an important early showcase of her ability to make a determined character compelling rather than merely likable. The Golden Globes database records an acting nomination, and the film remains a useful counterpoint to the broader comedy of Legally Blonde.
-
Legally Blonde (2001)
Elle Woods is Witherspoon’s most instantly recognizable character and her breakthrough film role, according to the Television Academy. The performance turns a buoyant comedy into a story about underestimated ambition. The Golden Globes records an acting nomination. If cultural impact and rewatchable comedy matter more to you than awards, this is a reasonable pick for number one.

Big Little Lies (2017–2019)
Witherspoon stars as Madeline Mackenzie and also serves as an executive producer in this ensemble drama. It is the strongest series pick here for awards recognition: the Television Academy records the show’s Outstanding Limited Series Emmy win and a lead-actress nomination for Witherspoon. The Golden Globes likewise records a limited-series win and an acting nomination.
-
Wild (2014)
Witherspoon stars as Cheryl Strayed and produced this adaptation of Strayed’s memoir. The physically and emotionally demanding lead performance earned Witherspoon her second Best Actress Oscar nomination, according to the Television Academy and Hulu Press. The source book is Wild: From Lost to Found on the Pacific Crest Trail by Cheryl Strayed; reading it is optional, but it offers the story in Strayed’s own memoir form.
-
The Morning Show (2019– )
Witherspoon plays Bradley Jackson and is an executive producer on this newsroom drama, a major part of her streaming-era television work. The Television Academy records lead-actress nominations in 2022 and 2024, as well as executive-producer drama-series recognition. Apple lists the series among her featured screen projects. These records establish its place in her television career, but do not by themselves establish current production or release status.
-
Sweet Home Alabama (2002)
This romantic comedy is the essential lighter counterpoint to Witherspoon’s darker dramatic roles. The Television Academy describes it as her biggest live-action commercial success, while Hulu Press highlights its opening as a milestone for a female-driven romantic comedy. It is a natural choice when you want a warm, accessible lead performance rather than a transformation into a real-life figure.

Little Fires Everywhere (2020)
Witherspoon stars and executive produces opposite Kerry Washington in this limited series adapted from Celeste Ng’s novel. The Television Academy records an Outstanding Limited Series nomination for Witherspoon as executive producer. It makes a strong companion to Big Little Lies for viewers interested in family tensions, social divisions and two-lead ensembles.
-
Cruel Intentions (1999)
This early ensemble film shows Witherspoon in a different register from the comic lead and award-winning dramatic roles that followed. It is worth including as a snapshot of her late-1990s work; Apple lists it among her notable performances.

-
Pleasantville (1998)
An early-career ensemble role that belongs on a career-spanning watchlist, though it is less representative of the star persona Witherspoon later established. Hulu Press and Apple both identify it among her film credits.
-
Sing (2016) and Sing 2 (2021)
In these animated family films, Witherspoon voices Rosita and takes part in their musical dimension. They show a side of her screen career that a list limited to live-action leads would miss. The publisher confirms both film credits, and Apple’s music listing links her performances with the soundtracks.

The Man in the Moon (1991)
This is the earliest entry here and a useful endpoint for a career-spanning selection. Apple’s biography says Witherspoon won her first film lead at age 14 and lists the film. It is significant as an early screen credit, rather than a summary of the mature comic and dramatic persona seen in the higher-ranked choices.
How to choose your first watch
- For drama: Choose Walk the Line for the awards-recognized lead performance, or Wild for a contemporary memoir adaptation.
- For comedy: Start with Legally Blonde for the defining popular role, Election for sharper satire, or Sweet Home Alabama for romantic comedy.
- For a series: Choose Big Little Lies for its awards distinction, Little Fires Everywhere for a limited-series adaptation, or The Morning Show for a newsroom drama.
Why the order is not definitive
The ranking balances acting, career milestones, recognition and range; it does not measure every role against a single objective scale. The official profiles establish major credits and awards, not a universal order. A viewer prioritizing popular recognition may place Legally Blonde first, while someone focused on dramatic performance and awards may choose Walk the Line. The middle and lower places are especially open to taste: Home Again, Water for Elephants, Vanity Fair, A Wrinkle in Time, This Means War, Monsters vs. Aliens, Mud, The Good Lie, Four Christmases, Inherent Vice, Truth Be Told, Daisy Jones & The Six, My Kind of Country and You’re Cordially Invited are possible additions or substitutes, but the available profiles do not support a definitive comparative placement for them.
What the awards records establish
When its profile was reviewed on 2026-10-08, the Golden Globes database showed two wins and seven nominations for Witherspoon, including wins for Walk the Line and Big Little Lies. On the same date, the Television Academy profile showed one Emmy win and seven nominations, including recognition associated with Big Little Lies, The Morning Show, Little Fires Everywhere and Daisy Jones & The Six. These are totals on those organizations’ profiles, not lifetime totals across every awards body; database counts can change.
Where to stream these titles
Availability varies by country and can change. The official profiles cited here do not establish current streaming availability by territory, so check a current local catalog listing before choosing a service.
