Their musical reference points and studio sound give them a distinct identity. The “new Sheeran” part of the comparison is harder to assess: the available reporting does not explain what it means.
Why Goose gets compared with the Dead and Phish
Goose, the American jam band, invites comparisons with the Grateful Dead and Phish because all three make improvisation central to their live work. That shared practice can make the succession question feel natural, but it does not establish that Goose has inherited either band’s sound, audience, or cultural role.
Music journalist Steven Hyden offers a useful way to hear the differences: consider the bands’ reference points. In his Uproxx profile of Goose, Hyden characterizes the Dead’s influences as blues, jazz, bluegrass, folk, and early rock; Phish’s as arena rock, funk, and 1970s progressive rock; and Goose’s as 21st-century indie rock. This is a critical framing, not a fixed genre taxonomy, but it helps explain why shared improvisation does not make the bands interchangeable.
What Goose’s improvisation does—and does not—prove
A jam is not just a long passage between verses. The appeal lies in how musicians respond to one another and how a performance can develop beyond the structure of the song. The Atlantic’s 2024 profile of Goose describes the group’s live improvisation as a collective act of listening. Rick Mitarotonda, the band’s guitarist and vocalist, told the magazine, “I’m constantly looking to create something that I feel like I could get lost in.”

Listeners do not all hear the results the same way. Admirers value the combination of accessible songs and open-ended live playing. Critics quoted by The Atlantic have called Goose an overrated “pop jam band” and argued that some improvisations fall into similar-sounding ruts. Those are competing responses to the music, not a settled verdict. The practical question is whether a particular performance feels like a song opening up—or like a familiar idea being stretched.
How the songs and records complicate the jam-band label
Goose’s live reputation can make the band sound more singularly jam-focused than its recorded work suggests. Apple Music classifies Everything Must Go as an indie rock album and describes a record that moves among 1980s funk-pop, longer songs, and material crossing the jam-band and pop-rock divide. That editorial description points to a broader palette; it is not a substitute for listening to the album.

Apple Music lists Everything Must Go as released on April 25, 2025, with 14 songs and a total duration of 1 hour 30 minutes. Those details establish the scale of the album, but length alone says little about how much improvisation it contains or how well its songs work.
Why live recordings are the better test of the comparison
If the question is whether Goose can sustain the kind of musical risk associated with the Dead and Phish, a studio album can only answer part of it. A live recording lets you hear how a song changes in performance and whether the group’s interplay keeps the improvisation compelling. The Atlantic reports that Goose varies set lists and that members take account of what they have recently played in a city. GQ has reported that the band records, mixes, and releases concerts, and has discussed its shows in connection with Nugs.net. These reports make concert recordings a useful listening route; they do not establish current catalog access or subscription terms.

Live culture also carries its own burden. Once a band is framed as the next Dead or Phish, each long jam can be treated as evidence for or against a legacy it did not choose. That framing can be useful shorthand for the kind of concert experience to expect, but it can obscure the more revealing questions: what songs does Goose write, what does its improvisation sound like, and what musical references does it bring to the stage?
Does “the new Sheeran” fit?
The Sheeran comparison remains unexplained in the reporting reviewed here. The available sources support discussion of Goose’s pop-facing songs and improvisational live style, but they do not identify a specific musical dimension connecting the band to Ed Sheeran. It would be guesswork to claim the comparison is about songwriting, vocals, popularity, or anything else without evidence for that reading.

There is also a current name distinction worth keeping clear: Goose is the jam band; Geese is a separate indie-rock group. A June 19, 2026 Boston Globe feature distinguishes the two. Checking the artist name matters when looking up recordings or coverage, especially when a search returns both acts.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Verdict: a band with its own reference points
Goose belongs in the conversation about modern jam bands because improvisation is central to its live identity. The Dead and Phish are useful points of comparison, but they are not a template Goose simply repeats: the bands draw on different musical traditions, and Goose’s recorded work reaches toward indie rock and pop as well as extended playing. Treat “the new Dead” and “the new Phish” as questions to test against the music, not as conclusions. “The new Sheeran” remains an open provocation until someone specifies what the comparison is meant to describe.
