Rhea Ripley announced on Raw on April 15, 2024, that she had to vacate WWE’s Women’s World Championship after an on-screen attack by Liv Morgan. WWE did not identify a medical diagnosis, and the storyline does not establish that Morgan caused a real-world injury. Ripley later returned to championship competition, so the 2024 vacancy should not be confused with her separate 2026 title history.
What happened when Ripley vacated the title in 2024?
On April 15, 2024, Ripley said on Raw that she had to relinquish the Women’s World Championship after a brutal assault by her longtime rival, Liv Morgan. WWE framed the attack as the cause of the injury within the wrestling storyline. Its announcement did not name a medical diagnosis or provide a clinical assessment of the injury’s severity. WWE’s announcement and the Raw video description document the segment.
Accordingly, “serious injury” is not a confirmed medical diagnosis or severity grade in WWE’s published account. The supported description is that Ripley vacated the championship because of an injury in the on-screen storyline.
How long was Ripley’s 2023–24 championship reign?
Ripley won the Women’s World Championship from Charlotte Flair at WrestleMania 39 and defended it against Becky Lynch at WrestleMania XL, according to WWE. WWE’s title-history page dates Ripley’s reign from April 1, 2023, through April 15, 2024, and lists its duration as 379 days. Becky Lynch’s next reign began April 22, 2024. WWE’s Women’s World Championship history records those dates.

Did Ripley return to win a championship again?
Yes. WWE’s profile records that Ripley regained the Women’s World Championship on January 6, 2025. In 2026, she won a different championship: WWE reports that she defeated Jade Cargill at WrestleMania 42 for the WWE Women’s Championship. Her WWE profile and WWE’s WrestleMania 42 results distinguish these later milestones.
What does WWE’s 2026 title history say?
WWE’s official history lists Ripley’s WWE Women’s Championship reign as running from April 19 to August 2, 2026, and lists Chelsea Green as champion from August 2. That record establishes the dates and succession, but it does not state that Ripley vacated the championship because of an injury. WWE’s WWE Women’s Championship history does not give a reason for the change.

A separate report published August 6, 2026, by Wrestling Observer/F4WOnline said Ripley underwent surgery to repair a slight meniscus tear after the injury kept her out of action. That report concerns her knee surgery; on the available official title-history record, it does not establish that the August 2 title change was an injury-related vacancy. F4WOnline’s report should therefore be kept distinct from WWE’s championship record.

WWE’s October 5, 2026 Raw preview said Stephanie Vaquer had reclaimed the Women’s World Championship from Liv Morgan at a September 12 live event. That is a separate title lineage from the WWE Women’s Championship that Ripley held in 2026. Keeping the exact championship names straight avoids conflating Ripley’s 2024 vacancy with later title changes. WWE’s Raw preview gives the later Women’s World Championship context.
