Will Smith’s Based on a True Story is an attempt to turn the scrutiny that followed the 2022 Oscars slap into music. It contains flashes of personality and vulnerability, but Rolling Stone Australia critic Mankaprr Conteh argues that therapy talk, familiar motivational lines and emphatic production often make the album feel overwrought rather than revealing. Her review’s pointed title places some responsibility on the public: the spectacle of Smith’s fall helped create the conditions for a comeback record built around explaining himself.
What the album is—and what Smith says he set out to do
Released March 28, 2025, Based on a True Story is Smith’s first full-length album since Lost and Found (2005). Apple Music lists 14 songs and a 37-minute runtime. The Associated Press describes it as Smith’s fifth studio album and notes appearances by Big Sean, Teyana Taylor, DJ Jazzy Jeff, Jaden Smith, Jac Ross and Sunday Service Choir. Apple Music’s album listing and the Associated Press interview establish those release details.
Smith has described the project as self-examination, saying, “Every song is about some part of myself that I discovered or wanted to explore, something I wanted to share.” That intent gives the album its emotional premise: these are songs shaped by a period in which an intensely public moment became part of how audiences saw him. Whether that premise yields compelling rap is a separate question—and the distinction is central to Conteh’s review.
Why the comeback is “our fault”
The title of Conteh’s Rolling Stone Australia review is a provocation, not a claim that listeners literally made Smith record this album. Her point is that the relentless attention surrounding the Oscars incident made a self-explanatory, introspective project feel like a natural response. The same attention, however, can make each attempt at reflection sound as if it is addressing the public record.

- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
That context matters without being the whole review. Conteh is not simply judging Smith for returning to music after controversy; she weighs what the songs do with his long career, familiar persona and stated desire to look inward. Her central reservation is that some of the material can sound more effective as memoir or interview than as rap: disclosure alone does not guarantee a specific image, memorable line or persuasive song.
Where the music finds personality
A voice between old and new rap styles
Conteh hears Smith moving from a retro Fresh Prince-era flow toward contemporary rap styles. That shift can give the record a sense of a performer trying to locate himself in a changing genre rather than merely replaying an old persona. The strongest passages, in her account, are those where Smith’s personality and comic timing remain audible; the album becomes more engaging when it sounds like him rather than like a generalized statement about growth.

Club rhythms and the push of production
Some tracks draw on Philly and Jersey club drums, bringing a more current rhythmic setting to the project. Those choices provide motion and contrast, but Conteh finds that the production can also overstate the message. When the arrangement insists on the importance of a reflection that the writing has not made vivid, the emotional emphasis can feel bigger than the song’s detail.
When introspection turns into generalities
The album’s stated aim is personal, yet Conteh argues that recurring therapy language and motivational clichés can blur the specificity that would make the disclosures land. The result is an uneven tension: Smith is offering pieces of himself, but some lines reach for familiar inspirational phrasing rather than the distinctive observation a listener might expect from someone with his life and public history.

That is why the title’s “true story” framing is not, by itself, a guarantee of intimacy. Personal subject matter can still feel generalized when it is expressed in broad lessons, and a famous incident can dominate the listener’s attention even when a song is trying to discuss something wider. Conteh’s criticism is about execution: the reflections are most compelling when they contain personality, and less so when they explain their significance instead of making it felt through the writing.

Based on a True Story is a meaningful return for Smith in subject and intent, but Conteh’s review finds the musical result inconsistent. Its flashes of vulnerability, humor and character suggest why Smith wanted to make it; the clunky delivery, familiar uplift and over-insistent production keep those moments from carrying the whole record. The album is therefore best understood not as a definitive account of the Oscars fallout, but as an uneven attempt to convert public scrutiny into self-portraiture.
