There is no verified, definitive ranking of the 30 best movie remakes to reproduce here. Instead, this is a fresh, criteria-led selection of 30 feature-film remakes, ranked for their direction, performances, craft, and the clarity with which each makes the earlier story its own. A remake can be compelling as a standalone film yet less successful as a response to its predecessor—or the reverse.

How this ranking judges a remake

A strong remake does more than repeat a familiar plot. It preserves what gives the earlier film its force, then changes enough—through setting, tone, point of view, performance style, or visual approach—to justify its existence. The result should have a coherent interpretation of its own and work for a viewer who has never seen the earlier version.

Those standards make this an editorial ranking, not a claim of universal agreement. The available published list comparison offers a useful example of how methods affect results: Cinema Dailies said its 2019 aggregation considered 153 films and selected 35 that appeared on at least three chosen best-remake lists. Its ordering measures recurrence across those lists, not an authoritative critical consensus or present-day audience preference. Cinema Dailies’ 2019 comparison placed The Thing (1982) first, The Fly (1986) second, True Grit (2010) third, Ocean’s Eleven (2001) fourth, and Invasion of the Body Snatchers (1978) fifth.

The title also resembles David Bell’s Collider article, “Ranking the 30 Best Movie Remakes of All Time,” published April 18, 2019. A Routledge book preview verifies the article’s title and date but does not provide its entries or rationale. This list is therefore not presented as Collider’s ranking or as a reconstruction of it.

The 30 best movie remakes

1. The Thing (1982)

John Carpenter turns a story of an isolated research crew into a masterclass in distrust. The Antarctic setting, controlled pacing, ensemble performances, and startling practical effects all serve the same idea: nobody can be sure who—or what—is standing beside them. It is gripping without requiring knowledge of the earlier screen version.

2. The Fly (1986)

David Cronenberg makes a transformation story into an intimate, increasingly tragic body-horror film. Jeff Goldblum’s performance gives the escalating physical change an emotional center, while the film’s tone moves from eccentric romance toward dread without losing coherence. Its distinct vision matters more than a simple comparison of effects.

3. True Grit (2010)

The Coen brothers’ adaptation favors a lean, unsentimental western shaped by Mattie Ross’s determination. Hailee Steinfeld’s performance anchors the film, and its formal choices give the story a different texture from the earlier adaptation. The result stands on its own while remaining a clearly distinct reading of the same material.

4. Ocean’s Eleven (2001)

Steven Soderbergh replaces the earlier film’s mid-century Rat Pack appeal with a polished, playful caper built around timing and ensemble chemistry. The pleasure lies in watching a group of characters execute an elaborate plan, but the remake’s relaxed confidence gives it an identity beyond the mechanics of the heist.

5. Invasion of the Body Snatchers (1978)

This version relocates the paranoia of the earlier story to contemporary San Francisco and makes urban life feel quietly vulnerable. Its performances and atmosphere turn suspicion into a social experience: the unsettling possibility that familiar people are no longer themselves.

6. A Star Is Born (2018)

Bradley Cooper’s version moves the story into a modern music landscape and gives the romance a raw, performance-driven immediacy. Lady Gaga and Cooper make the central relationship feel specific rather than merely emblematic, while the film’s treatment of fame and decline gives the familiar structure contemporary weight.

7. The Maltese Falcon (1941)

John Huston’s adaptation turns Dashiell Hammett’s hard-boiled story into a defining exercise in noir control. Humphrey Bogart’s Sam Spade is guarded, witty, and morally difficult to pin down. The film’s precision and atmosphere make it satisfying even for viewers unfamiliar with earlier adaptations.

8. Scarface (1983)

Brian De Palma and Al Pacino transform the earlier crime story into an extravagant portrait of ambition and self-destruction in Miami. Its scale, visual bravado, and central performance are deliberately excessive; that excess is the point, not an attempt to imitate the original’s period setting.

9. The Departed (2006)

Martin Scorsese relocates the premise of the Hong Kong film Infernal Affairs to Boston and builds a muscular crime thriller around divided loyalties. The remake’s setting and ensemble give it a distinct social texture, while its shifting perspectives sustain tension independent of the source film.

10. The Wizard of Oz (1939)

Victor Fleming’s musical fantasy makes a journey into a vivid, emotionally legible world of color, songs, and memorable character performances. Its lasting strength is not simply its spectacle: Dorothy’s wish to return home supplies the film with a clear emotional path through its imaginative detours.

11. Little Shop of Horrors (1986)

Frank Oz’s musical remake turns a modest horror-comedy premise into a buoyant, sharply staged showpiece. The songs, comic timing, and increasingly unruly plant give it a distinct rhythm, while the cast keeps the absurdity grounded in recognizable desire and desperation.

12. The Man Who Knew Too Much (1956)

Alfred Hitchcock remade his own earlier film with greater scale and a carefully sustained sense of suspense. The family-centered premise gives the thriller an immediate emotional stake, and the set pieces build tension through timing and withheld information rather than constant action.

13. The Magnificent Seven (1960)

John Sturges adapts Seven Samurai into a western about a group of gunfighters defending a village. The change of genre and setting gives the ensemble story a new character, while the film’s focus on sacrifice and uneasy heroism preserves the underlying dramatic appeal.

14. His Girl Friday (1940)

Howard Hawks reworks the play and its earlier film adaptation into a rapid-fire newsroom comedy. Rosalind Russell’s Hildy Johnson is not merely a romantic counterpart; she drives the story with professional skill and comic force. The result has a distinctive pace and point of view.

15. The Birdcage (1996)

Mike Nichols’s American version of La Cage aux Folles finds both broad comic situations and warmth in the family at its center. Robin Williams and Nathan Lane shape a lively double act, but the film’s lasting appeal comes from treating its characters as more than the setup for a farce.

16. 12 Monkeys (1995)

Terry Gilliam expands the premise of Chris Marker’s short film La Jetée into a feature-length science-fiction puzzle. Its unstable sense of time and memory gives the story its own formal identity, while Bruce Willis and Madeleine Stowe provide an emotional thread through the disorientation.

17. The Ring (2002)

Gore Verbinski adapts the Japanese horror film Ringu into a colder, more expansive American ghost story. The investigation structure gives the dread momentum, and the film’s visual restraint makes the menace feel pervasive instead of dependent on a stream of shocks.

18. The Blob (1988)

This remake gives the creature-feature premise a darker edge and a stronger sense of physical danger. Its effects and brisk pacing make the threat tangible, while the film’s willingness to push beyond the original’s tone helps it function as more than a polished repeat.

19. The Hills Have Eyes (2006)

Alexandre Aja’s version intensifies the original’s survival-horror premise with an abrasive, visceral style. The remake’s most effective choices make the family’s vulnerability central to the violence, though its relentless approach will suit viewers more comfortable with graphic horror.

20. Cape Fear (1991)

Martin Scorsese remakes the earlier thriller as a study of fear, punishment, and family instability. Robert De Niro’s menace and the film’s heightened visual style create a different kind of unease from the original, with the conflict pressing into domestic life rather than remaining a distant threat.

21. The Thomas Crown Affair (1999)

John McTiernan recasts the earlier caper as a sleek contest of attraction and strategy. The pleasure comes from the shifting balance between the characters, not simply the theft at the center of the plot. Its polished style gives the remake a personality distinct from its predecessor.

22. The Parent Trap (1998)

Nancy Meyers’s remake makes its central double role a showcase for Lindsay Lohan and builds an affectionate family comedy around the twins’ elaborate plan. Its appeal comes from performance and warmth as much as from the familiar reunion premise.

23. The Muppet Christmas Carol (1992)

Brian Henson’s adaptation gives Dickens’s story a musical, comic frame without losing its moral and emotional arc. Michael Caine plays the transformation of Scrooge sincerely, allowing the Muppets’ humor to complement rather than undercut the story’s themes.

24. Hairspray (2007)

Adam Shankman’s musical adaptation carries the story’s energy into a large-scale ensemble production. Its bright performances and dance numbers keep the film buoyant, while the underlying conflict over exclusion gives the spectacle a purpose beyond nostalgia.

25. The Crazies (2010)

Breck Eisner’s version takes the small-town outbreak premise and builds an efficient thriller from uncertainty and social breakdown. Its strongest scenes make ordinary institutions feel fragile, turning the setting into a source of tension rather than mere backdrop.

26. The Jungle Book (2016)

Jon Favreau uses computer-generated environments to reimagine the animated classic as a live-action-style adventure. The technical spectacle is central to its appeal, but the film also benefits from a clear coming-of-age journey that keeps the effects-driven world readable.

27. The Mummy (1999)

Stephen Sommers shifts the earlier horror property toward swashbuckling adventure and comic chemistry. That change in tone is the remake’s defining choice: it prioritizes momentum and escapism over dread, producing a lively adventure rather than a straight-faced monster film.

28. Funny Games (2007)

Michael Haneke’s shot-for-shot English-language remake preserves the formal severity of his earlier film. Its refusal to soften the viewer’s discomfort is a deliberate artistic position, making it one of the list’s most challenging choices rather than an easy recommendation for conventional suspense.

29. Let Me In (2010)

Matt Reeves adapts the Swedish film Let the Right One In with a wintry, restrained approach to a story about loneliness and violence. The performances keep the supernatural premise intimate, and the remake succeeds when it attends to the children’s isolation rather than relying on horror mechanics alone.

30. The Magnificent Ambersons (1942)

Orson Welles’s adaptation of Booth Tarkington’s novel is often discussed alongside its production history, but its surviving form remains a striking portrait of a family and a changing social order. It earns a place here for its visual ambition and sense of loss, even as its compromised final version complicates any uncomplicated verdict.

Why rankings of remakes differ

Lists use different boundaries: one may include only feature films, while another may also consider television, games, or other adaptations. They also reward different things. A ranking based on how often a title appears on other lists answers a different question from a critic’s ranking based on direction, performance, or how boldly a remake revises its source.

That distinction matters when reading any “best of all time” list. The five leading films in Cinema Dailies’ 2019 aggregation are evidence of recurrence in its selected lists; they should not be mistaken for a current audience poll, a comprehensive critical verdict, or the contents of Collider’s separately titled 2019 article.
