The RaptureTok episode combined a dated prophecy with a much older tradition—and drew earnest believers, curious viewers, skeptics and joke-makers alike.

RaptureTok centered on a prediction by South African believer Joshua Mhlakela that the Rapture would occur on September 23 or 24, 2025. Those dates have passed. The episode was not evidence that all Christians expected the event: it brought prophecy claims, anxious questions, skepticism and jokes together in one fast-moving online conversation.

What happened during RaptureTok?

In a YouTube appearance, Mhlakela said the Rapture would happen on September 23 or 24, 2025. His prediction spread on TikTok under #RaptureTok, drawing people who took it seriously as well as people who questioned or mocked it. The Associated Press reported the prediction and its context on September 23, 2025 (Associated Press).

The online conversation included several kinds of posts: earnest prophecy content, personal testimony, advice framed as preparation, skeptical explanations and parody. The Guardian’s September 23 reporting described this mix; it did not establish what share of posts or viewers believed Mhlakela’s prediction (The Guardian).

At the time, Axios reported more than 500,000 views for Mhlakela’s YouTube video and more than 300,000 posts under #Rapture on TikTok. Those were dated September 2025 figures: the hashtag count was not a count of unique users, nor proof that every post referred to Mhlakela (Axios).

A September 24, 2025 George Washington University media tip sheet also described Rapture warnings and preparation advice being reposted on TikTok and in Facebook groups. Its reference to hundreds of thousands of group members describes group membership, not a verified tally of believers (George Washington University).

What does “the Rapture” mean?

In some evangelical Christian traditions, the Rapture is the belief that Jesus returns and takes true believers to heaven before a period of tribulation that culminates in the world’s end. Christians do not all share this belief or interpret the relevant passages in the same way. The word “rapture” itself does not appear in the Bible, though passages in 1 Thessalonians, 1 Corinthians and Matthew 24 are commonly cited in support, according to the Associated Press.

That distinction matters when discussing a viral prediction: a religious interpretation of scripture is not the same thing as a verifiable forecast of a date. Mhlakela’s predicted dates passed without the event he described. The episode therefore belongs to the history of date-setting and online belief, not to an unfolding event.

A modern belief with older roots

Cornell University professor of ancient Mediterranean religions Kim Haines-Eitzen places Rapture ideas within a much older tradition of apocalyptic thought: “Ideas about the Rapture are best understood within the larger framework of apocalypticism, an ancient Jewish worldview that predates Christianity.” Her September 25, 2025 interview provides historical framing rather than a claim that all Christians understand the end times alike (Cornell University).

The modern Rapture belief developed in the mid-19th century in Britain and other English-speaking settings, then circulated through Bible conferences, evangelical media, the Scofield Reference Bible, film and fiction. The Left Behind novels by Tim LaHaye and Jerry B. Jenkins became a prominent pop-culture expression of the idea. They are fiction, not a guide to theology or a record of an actual event, as the Associated Press’s account of the belief’s history makes clear.

Date-setting has also recurred in different religious movements. The Associated Press recounts William Miller’s expectations for 1843–44 and the 1844 “Great Disappointment,” Harold Camping’s 2011 prediction, and a Korean evangelical group’s 1992 prediction. These episodes offer historical context; they do not make every Christian tradition or believer interchangeable.

Why do end-times ideas return?

Haines-Eitzen says apocalyptic ideas, including expectations of imminent judgment, often emerge during suffering or after traumatic events. She also points to early Christians who expected the end in their own lifetimes and later revivals of such ideas during political and social crises. As she put it, “Apocalyptic ideology, including the notion of an imminent judgment day, often emerges during times of suffering or in the wake of traumatic events.” This is a scholar’s historical interpretation, not a universal rule that explains every person’s beliefs.

RaptureTok brought that older tradition into contact with a platform where a single topic could be approached as testimony, warning, debate or joke. An anxious question such as “what time the rapture” could sit beside a skeptical response or a parody; searches such as “what happens if you’re left behind” and “post-rapture pet care” captured the range of concerns and humor visible during the episode. The Associated Press reported these as examples of reader phrasing, not as a ranking of current search volume.

Social media helped make the claim visible to people with very different motives, but the available reporting does not show that an algorithm alone caused belief or that every person who watched or posted accepted the prediction. The viral scale of a conversation is not a measure of conviction.

What RaptureTok can—and cannot—tell us

  • It was a specific prediction. Mhlakela named September 23 or 24, 2025; the dates have passed.
  • It reflected one strand of Christian belief. The Rapture is not a uniform Christian position, and interpretations of the Second Coming and related passages differ.
  • Its online audience was mixed. Reporting documented serious, skeptical and satirical engagement, but not a representative survey of viewers or believers.
  • Its reach figures measured attention, not belief. The view and hashtag counts reported in September 2025 cannot establish how many unique people participated or what they thought.
