The profile’s clearest example is Hoskote’s translation and introduction to I, Lalla: The Poems of Lal Ded, which Roy presents as a way to restore context and agency to a medieval Kashmiri poet often simplified into a spiritual archetype.
Why Roy reads Hoskote as a historian
Roy’s framing is not that poetry replaces historical scholarship. Rather, she argues that Hoskote’s writing asks what counts as historical evidence and whose experience becomes visible in the stories a culture preserves. A history focused on rulers, dynasties and political change can leave private memory and domestic life at the margins. Hoskote’s poems and essays turn toward those less formal records without treating them as merely decorative or secondary.
That approach also complicates the idea of retrieval as a return to a comforting past. In Roy’s account, what comes back into view may include violence, political conflict and histories that disturb reassuring narratives. The archive matters not because it confirms what readers already believe, but because it can preserve difference and unsettle familiar accounts.
Grandmother Lal and the recovery of context
At the center of the profile is I, Lalla: The Poems of Lal Ded, Hoskote’s translation and introduction to the work of the medieval Kashmiri poet. Roy describes the introduction as an effort to restore historical context and agency to Lal Ded, whom later accounts can reduce to a simplified spiritual figure. The relevant distinction is between a person situated in social, religious and historical contexts and an archetype made to serve a later story.

Roy asks, “Why Grandmother Lal and why is ‘herstory’ such a knotted blur in our public history of literature and religion?” The terms belong to her critical framing: “herstory” points to women’s experience and the ways it can be obscured in public accounts, while “Grandmother Lal” makes the question of inheritance tangible. Roy’s profile and its account of Hoskote’s introduction are the basis for this reading; they do not settle every disputed detail of Lal Ded’s biography.
In this interpretation, recovering Lal Ded is not simply adding a woman’s name to an existing literary timeline. It means asking how later traditions have shaped the figure readers encounter, and what historical experience those traditions may have obscured. The translation and introduction become an invitation to read her as more than a ready-made symbol.

How private memory becomes an archive
Roy connects Hoskote’s interest in public history with the smaller archive of family life: stories, photographs and remembered people. She reports that Hoskote’s knowledge of his grandmothers came through family folklore, photographs and his parents’ stories, a process she calls “an archaeological exploration.” The comparison suggests patient work among fragments, rather than access to a complete record.
Hoskote describes the archive as a persistent concern in his writing: “The idea of the archive has always been strong in my work, and that became intensified in The Sleepwalker’s Archive.” Roy connects that concern to a fear of losing memory and language. Here, the archive is both an image for what can be preserved and a reminder of how easily lives and ways of speaking can disappear from collective memory.

Literary inheritance beyond a single poet
Roy presents Hoskote’s criticism and editorial work as part of the same effort to make literary inheritance visible. The profile discusses his writing about Nissim Ezekiel, Adil Jussawalla, Dom Moraes and Arun Kolatkar, alongside Reasons for Belonging (2002), an anthology. It also mentions Hoskote’s edition of Dom Moraes’s collected poems.
These acts of selection and commentary do more than preserve names. They create ways for readers to encounter writers in relation to one another and to the histories that shaped their work. Roy’s profile treats this attention to predecessors as a form of literary memory: inheritance is made through reading, editing and argument, not just through a list of canonical figures.

Form, conflict and the shape of remembered history
The profile names collections including Zones of Assault (1991), The Cartographer’s Apprentice (2000), The Sleepwalker’s Archive and Vanishing Acts: New and Selected Poems 1985–2005. Roy also discusses Central Time, which she describes as the then-recent collection in 2015; that description is specific to the date of her profile, not a statement about current publication status.
Roy reports Hoskote describing Central Time as “an architecture of one hundred poems,” unfolding “as a cycle in five phases.” In his fuller explanation, quoted by Roy, he says: “My general logic for Central Time was to develop an architecture of one hundred poems, to celebrate forms such as the sataka and the century, and to have it unfold as a cycle in five phases.” The figure and design are Hoskote’s account as reported in Roy’s article, not an independent statistical claim.

Structure does not make this a project of orderly commemoration alone. Roy emphasizes that Hoskote’s poems return to violence and political conflict as well as memory. The past they retrieve can be difficult: it includes what official or comforting stories leave out. That tension is central to her portrait of a poet working historically—not by turning poems into documents, but by making readers attend to the lives, losses and contradictions that records may not hold.
