Its statement linked the decision to Bruce Hall’s readiness to return after a health-related absence and to what it called “irreconcilable differences” between Hall and Kevin Cronin. The announcement concerned touring as REO Speedwagon; it did not mean the band’s songs would no longer be performed.
What did REO Speedwagon announce?
In its September 16, 2024, statement, REO Speedwagon Management said Hall intended to return, but that the consensus was he had not recovered enough to perform at the level fans expected. The statement also said Hall and Cronin had not intended to leave the band. It then explained: “Due to this complex situation, irreconcilable differences arose between Bruce and Kevin.” Management concluded: “So, it is with great sadness that we announce REO Speedwagon will cease touring effective January 1, 2025.” Read the official statement.
The statement did not spell out the personal or business details behind the differences. It is therefore not possible to say from the announcement what those disagreements involved beyond the context it provided.
How did the decision unfold?
- September 16, 2024: Management published the announcement, identifying the effective date as January 1, 2025.
- September 17, 2024: The Los Angeles Times reported that Hall had stepped away for back surgery, Matt Bissonette had filled in, and Cronin had recently undergone emergency surgery. The newspaper also described late-2024 dates as the remaining itinerary known at that time. Those dates are historical, not current ticket opportunities. Read the newspaper’s report.
- January 1, 2025: The date management gave for REO Speedwagon to cease touring.
Did REO Speedwagon’s music stop being performed?
No. The announcement was about touring as REO Speedwagon, not a promise that the songs would disappear from live shows. On February 14, 2025, Cronin’s official website announced a “Brotherhood of Rock” tour with Styx and Don Felder. Cronin said, “This year, that same band is called the Kevin Cronin Band,” and described the group performing REO songs, including the album Hi Infidelity in full. That is evidence of REO music being performed by a separately named act, not evidence that REO Speedwagon resumed touring. See the announcement on Cronin’s official site.
