What R-Truth said about the risk of amputation
On Cheap Heat, published January 19, 2024, R-Truth discussed an emotionally and physically draining recovery. The Ringer’s episode description says the injury “nearly left him with an amputated leg” and marks the conversation at 36:08. According to reporting on the interview, R-Truth said he spent roughly four or five months trying to control the infection and was told amputation was another possible outcome. FirstSportz published a transcription of his remarks, but the wording includes an awkward interruption; the central point is his reported account, not a clean, independently verified quotation. FirstSportz’s report attributes the account to the Ringer interview.
The available coverage does not include medical records, a statement from a treating clinician, or a WWE medical statement. It therefore does not independently establish the infection type, the precise clinical basis for the amputation risk, or the complete treatment chronology.

What happened to his leg?
Reports trace the original injury to a November 2022 NXT match with Grayson Waller. Sources use different terms for it: Fightful calls it a torn quadriceps muscle, while POST Wrestling describes a quad tendon tear. Those descriptions should remain attributed to their respective outlets rather than treated as a confirmed single diagnosis.
R-Truth said the recovery was complicated by an infection and a wound or hole at his knee. POST Wrestling’s account of his interview remarks describes further surgery, wound care involving a vacuum-assisted device, and treatment through a PICC line. The outlet also reported that he had a second surgery after contracting an infection in January 2023, delaying his recovery. When did R-Truth return to WWE?
POST Wrestling and Fightful report that R-Truth returned to WWE television at Survivor Series 2023, after about a year away.
