The most consequential recent development involving the Manzos is a federal case against Thomas Manzo, Dina Manzo’s former husband. A jury convicted him in 2024 of arranging an assault on Dina’s then-boyfriend, Dave Cantin, and of offenses related to concealing records from investigators; he was sentenced to 84 months in prison. The case does not establish criminal involvement by other members of the Manzo family, and the available official record does not support ten separate revelations.
What happened in the federal case?
According to the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the District of New Jersey, the case centered on the July 18, 2015 assault of Dave Cantin, who was then dating Dina Manzo and later married her. Prosecutors said Thomas Manzo arranged the attack through John Perna in exchange for a free wedding reception at The Brownstone, the Manzo family’s New Jersey event venue. The Justice Department’s account describes the arrangement; it should not be read as a separate jury finding on every detail in the government’s announcements.

On June 4, 2024, after a two-and-a-half-week trial, a federal jury convicted Thomas Manzo of a violent crime in aid of racketeering, conspiracy to commit a violent crime in aid of racketeering, and falsifying or concealing documents related to a federal investigation. On October 15, 2024, he was sentenced to 84 months in prison. The U.S. Attorney’s Office announcement of the conviction and sentence gives the official outcome.
How the assault and wedding reception were connected
The Justice Department said Thomas Manzo hired Perna in spring 2015 to assault Cantin. The government’s account identifies July 18 as the date of the assault and says the later wedding reception took place in August 2015 at The Brownstone. The 2020 charging announcement described approximately 330 people attending the reception; that is the government’s figure in its announcement, not an independently verified head count.

At the time of the original charging announcement, the government described these details as allegations. The later jury verdict established Thomas Manzo’s criminal liability for the offenses listed in the 2024 conviction release. For the prosecution’s original account of the alleged arrangement and reception, see the 2020 Justice Department charging release.
What happened to John Perna?
Perna, whom prosecutors identified as the person hired to carry out the assault, pleaded guilty to aggravated assault. On June 10, 2021, he was sentenced to 30 months in prison. The sentence and offense are set out in the U.S. Attorney’s Office sentencing announcement.
What investigators said about the records
The case also involved documents sought during a federal investigation. In its 2020 charging release, the Justice Department said grand-jury subpoenas sought records related to the August reception and alleged that Thomas Manzo failed to produce relevant documents and submitted a false document and certification. Those were allegations at the charging stage. The 2024 conviction release later reported the jury’s guilty verdict for falsifying or concealing records related to the investigation.
How Dina, Caroline, and Thomas are related
Dina Manzo and Caroline Manzo are sisters and both appeared on The Real Housewives of New Jersey. Dina married Thomas Manzo in 2007; they separated in 2012 and divorced in 2016, according to Us Weekly’s June 2, 2025 relationship timeline. Thomas is the brother of Caroline’s husband, Albert Manzo.

Those family connections explain why the case drew attention among RHONJ viewers, but they do not implicate Caroline or Albert. The federal case materials cited here concern Thomas Manzo and Perna; they do not establish criminal participation by other relatives.

The phrase “sketchy facts” is a headline description, not a legal category. The record supports a clear account of one federal case, its outcome, and the family relationships that put it in the RHONJ orbit—not ten distinct criminal revelations about the family. A separate 2024 complaint copy by Caroline Manzo against Bravo carried a notice that it had not yet been reviewed and approved by the county clerk and might not have been accepted for filing. Its allegations belong to a separate civil dispute and are not established facts or evidence of criminal conduct by the Manzo family.
