David Garrison left Married… with Children after four seasons because he missed live theater and wanted to return to the stage. The move did not end his connection to the sitcom: he later appeared in it again. His career continued in theater, including Broadway work, and recent coverage discussed his role in Berkshire Theatre Group’s production of Lovesong. That evidence shows a change in emphasis, not that quitting damaged his career or changed it irreversibly.
Why did David Garrison leave Married… with Children?
Garrison is best known to many viewers as Steve Rhoades, the Bundys’ neighbor. He left the regular role after four seasons because he missed performing live and wanted to pursue theater work. In a 2004 Talkin’ Broadway interview, he put the departure plainly: “I left the show after four years, and that was fine.” Talkin’ Broadway interview

The accounts support a personal choice to return to the stage. They do not establish a feud, a forced exit, financial sacrifice, or a professional setback. Garrison later returned to the sitcom for appearances, so leaving the regular cast did not mean he never played Steve again. SlashFilm retrospective
Did leaving change his career forever?
“Changed his career forever” overstates what the available accounts show. They document a shift toward live theater after the sitcom, followed by a sustained theater career that included Broadway roles. They do not establish that the decision was irreversible or that it harmed his prospects. The more grounded takeaway is that Garrison chose stage work over remaining a regular on the show.

What is David Garrison doing now?
Recent TheaterMania interview coverage discussed Garrison’s role in Lovesong with Berkshire Theatre Group and described a five-decade theater career. That is evidence of recent theater work, not confirmation that the production is still running on October 8, 2026. Check Berkshire Theatre Group’s current listings before relying on its performance dates or looking for tickets. TheaterMania interview coverage
His later stage and Broadway work fits the reason he gave for leaving the sitcom: he wanted to return to live performance. The available coverage supports that career direction without implying that theater was his only work or that his relationship with the series ended after his regular run.
