Historian Rosemary Wakeman’s Past Imperfect episode uses Victor Sassoon’s business life to connect Bombay, London and Shanghai between the world wars. Its central idea is that these cities shared the pressures of a rapidly changing global economy: finance and property expanded, while inequality, labor conflict, political polarization and war threatened the gains. The episode draws comparisons with the present, without claiming that the two eras were identical.

Who was Victor Sassoon?

Victor Sassoon was a scion of a Baghdadi Jewish family that settled in nineteenth-century Bombay and built wealth through opium and cotton. In the episode, his story is a way into a broader history: how family business, finance, real estate, technology and elite leisure linked three major cities during the interwar years.

Wakeman, a historian and author of The Worlds of Victor Sassoon: Bombay, London, Shanghai, 1918–1941, presents Sassoon not just as a wealthy individual but as a figure whose activities reveal connections among urban economies. Her book was published in 2024; BiblioVault’s catalog record lists the title and publication details.

Why connect Bombay, London and Shanghai?

The episode treats the cities as international hubs rather than as isolated reflections of their respective countries. Wakeman puts it this way: “The three cities ‘resembled one another more than they represented their individual countries,’” as quoted by Dinyar Patel in his March 11, 2025 Scroll.in article introducing the episode.

  • Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.

  • Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
  • Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
  • 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.

Across these urban centers, the story follows a shift away from older mercantile capitalism toward finance, investment and real estate. Modernization and expanding wealth did not benefit everyone equally: the same growth accompanied sharp urban inequality and labor unrest. The episode’s comparison is most useful as a lens on shared pressures—how global connections can generate opportunity while intensifying conflict—not as a claim that the three cities had identical histories.

How did conflict reshape Sassoon’s world?

Economic expansion unfolded amid political polarization, colonial strain and war. The episode describes Japanese forces’ 1937–38 assault on Shanghai and World War II as devastating to Sassoon’s holdings. It also notes that instability could raise property values as refugees arrived. These points describe competing effects of upheaval; they do not establish a precise valuation or mean that all of Sassoon’s holdings were lost.

That tension is central to the episode’s account of the interwar city: real estate and investment could appear resilient or even gain value in one respect while violence and war destroyed wealth and disrupted the systems that supported it.

What does the episode say about the present?

Patel frames the episode around “an uncanny resemblance to today’s world in flux.” The comparison concerns broad patterns—international hubs, changing finance and property markets, inequality, political polarization and instability. It is a historical analogy offered by the episode, not evidence that today’s global economy is repeating the interwar period or that the outcomes must be the same.
