Peggy Whitson’s path to space began on a farm outside Beaconsfield, Iowa, and led through degrees in biology, chemistry and biochemistry to decades of NASA research and astronaut leadership. After retiring from NASA in 2018, she continued flying with Axiom Space, commanding two private astronaut missions. Her story is not just a leap from rural Iowa to orbit: it is also a record of scientific training, operational responsibility and a career that continued beyond government service.
Growing up in Iowa, inspired by the Moon landing
Whitson was born in 1960 in Mount Ayr, Iowa. NASA lists Beaconsfield as her hometown, and Axiom Space says she grew up on a farm outside the town. Axiom traces her ambition to become an astronaut to watching the first Moon landing on television in 1969.
That is the documented outline of her early story. It places a defining event in space exploration alongside her Iowa upbringing without requiring an invented account of childhood chores, family finances or a single dramatic turning point.
Science education before NASA
Whitson graduated from Mount Ayr Community High School in 1978. In 1981, she earned a bachelor’s degree in biology/chemistry from Iowa Wesleyan College. She then completed a doctorate in biochemistry at Rice University in 1985.

The progression from undergraduate study to a doctorate gave her a scientific foundation that would inform her NASA work. Her career was not limited to research, however: she later took on astronaut-office leadership and command responsibilities aboard the International Space Station.
Research, leadership and command at NASA
Whitson joined NASA’s astronaut corps and became the first NASA science officer on the ISS. NASA’s December 2022 biography also records her service as chief of the Astronaut Office and as an ISS commander. She commanded Expeditions 16 and 51.

NASA’s biography attributes to her three long-duration ISS missions, ten spacewalks and 60 hours and 21 minutes of spacewalk time. The same biography reports 665 days in space across those three NASA missions. That number describes her NASA-mission record at the time of the biography, not her later total after commercial flights.
From NASA retirement to Axiom Space
Whitson retired from NASA in June 2018, but her spaceflight career continued. She joined Axiom Space and commanded Ax-2 and Ax-4, carrying her experience as a NASA astronaut and station commander into commercial human spaceflight.

The figures differ because they cover different parts of her career: NASA’s December 2022 biography records 665 days across three NASA missions, while Axiom Space’s profile, accessed October 8, 2026, gives her cumulative total after Ax-4 as 695 days, 7 hours and 4 minutes. The latter includes her later Axiom flights.
Ax-4: an international mission to the ISS
Whitson commanded Ax-4, which launched on June 25, 2025, and splashed down on July 15. Axiom describes it as an 18-day mission aboard the ISS. Its report says the crew conducted more than 60 scientific experiments during the mission.

For a documentary-minded view of her story, the important contrast is not simply farm versus space. It is the continuity between an early interest sparked by the Moon landing, years of scientific preparation, the responsibilities of living and working in orbit, and a later role in an increasingly international commercial spaceflight program.
