Princess Theodora of Greece and Denmark married Matthew Kumar in a Greek Orthodox ceremony in Athens on 28 September 2024. The wedding followed two postponements associated with the COVID-19 pandemic and the 2023 death of Theodora’s father, former King Constantine II. It was a royal-family celebration, not a state wedding: Greece had abolished its monarchy in 1973, and the former royal family held no political power.
When and where did Princess Theodora marry Matthew Kumar?
The ceremony took place at the Metropolitan Cathedral of the Annunciation in Athens on Saturday, 28 September 2024. The Greek Royal Family had announced a 5:30 p.m. start. A post-wedding account by the Royal Family of Serbia confirmed the venue and ceremony.
Metropolitan Dorotheos II of Syros officiated. The Serbian account identified his wider ecclesiastical jurisdiction as Syros, Tinos, Andros, Kea and Milos.
Why did the couple choose Athens?
The Greek Royal Family said the choice reflected the couple’s love of Greece, their continuing ties to the country and their wish to share Greek culture, hospitality and identity with their guests. The cathedral also carried a close family connection: Theodora’s parents, King Constantine II and Queen Anne-Marie, married there on 18 September 1964.

The September 2024 ceremony fell ten days after the anniversary of her parents’ wedding. The Independent reported that Theodora was 41 and Kumar was 34 at the time; it described Kumar as a lawyer in the United States.
Why was the wedding postponed twice?
The couple rescheduled the wedding twice before it took place. The first postponement followed the COVID-19 pandemic. A later postponement followed the death of Constantine II in January 2023. The Royal Family of Serbia and The Independent both reported the two postponements; neither account supports treating a single early date or venue as the plan throughout that period.

What happened during the wedding weekend?
The Royal Family of Serbia described celebrations spanning three days, from 27 to 29 September 2024:
- Friday, 27 September: The couple hosted a welcome reception at the Byzantine and Christian Museum.
- Saturday, 28 September: The Greek Orthodox ceremony was followed by a reception.
- Sunday, 29 September: Guests gathered for a farewell brunch at the One & Only Aesthesis Hotel.
The Serbian report said Crown Prince Alexander and Crown Princess Katherine attended, along with members of other European royal families, including Crown Prince Pavlos, Queen Anne-Marie, Queen Sofia of Spain and Princess Benedikte of Denmark. Alexander was Theodora’s godfather; he said he and his wife were happy to share the day with his goddaughter and her groom.

Who was in the wedding party?
The Greek Royal Family named Crown Prince Pavlos, Prince Nikolaos, Prince Philippos, Princess Maria-Olympia, Prince Achilleas-Andreas and Arrietta Morales de Grecia among the wedding party. The Independent reported that Pavlos escorted Theodora down the aisle and described additional attendant roles. Those specific roles should not be assumed for every person named in the family’s announcement.

No. Theodora was a daughter of the late King Constantine II and Queen Anne-Marie, but she did not represent the Greek state at the wedding. Constantine was Greece’s last king before the monarchy was abolished in 1973. The Independent noted that descendants of the former royal family may still be regarded by some as princes and princesses, but they have no political power. The event was a family wedding held in a historic church, not an official function of a reigning Greek monarchy.
